But should I wait for next model? Smitten by test drive of Polo GTI last weekend. Tried Polo TDI and low-end Golf, then Polo GTI, which just felt so much better. Seriously quick, composed, nice gearchange (I own a toyota), and feels solid (of course). Rarity also a drawcard. Bit concerned with stories about various things going wrong under warranty, and fuel consumption. Still was ready to put my money down. But then did some research and this car is fairly old (mk4 started in 2001). Apparently new Polo due in 2009 with GTI in 2010 (see link below) So do I wait?
"Starting from 2010 the competition of the fast small ones goes into a new round. Because then the new Polo comes as GTI - with 185 HP from a 1,4-Liter-TSI. The competition runs itself already times warmly"

Only you can answer this question. If you don't need a car right now and can hold off, then you have that option. Most people who are looking at getting a new car are generally doing so because they need one soon.
The thing you have to remember is that it's not always beneficial to buying the latest and greatest. You mentioned that the current Polo was designed in 2001, they've had all this time to fix issues and fine tune the car. The engine on a GTI (if I recall correctly) is 11 years old. That alone makes me happy as it's obviously a brilliant design.
Early adopters generally have it rough. Whether it's small annoying issues that will be fixed in a later release or a bigger issue with the engine/transmission. Just now I've read that some Polo's gearboxes are being fixed under warrenty due to a recall overseas. That's good news! If a similiar thing happens on a brand new model, it's going to take some time before they gather the data and discover all the problems before they can issue a fix.
I've been an early adopter on a couple of things (because I'm a bit of a gadget junkie) and it's always come back and bit me in the arse.
Let's not forget also that this is a car we're talking about, not some piece of tech.
Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I'd buy now and in 5 years or so if I /REALLY/ liked the new model, I'd buy. At least by then, they've had 3 years to work out the kinks.
don't be discouraged about the polo having a tried and tested engine. the best engines are the ones that don't go away. another example of this is the Mitsubishi 4G63 engine, which has been powering the Evo since the early '90s and was 1st introduced in the '87 Galant VR-4.
and i have a feeling that the new polo will be bigger and heavier, and i'm not too sure how tunable the TSI engines are?
DaveMack & Grant are right. The 1.8T is a really good base and the work made with this Polo is a pleasure at each day !!
This engine is a guarantee of quality since it has equipped many cars by the past...
From my point of view, when you drive this car, it's not easy to drive an other in the same category...The engine sound miss me when it happens that i let her in the garage !
I love the torque it has makes it really easy to drive you dont have to rev the ??? out of it like other small cars The size easy to park do u turns having not to put mag wheels body kit muffler ect due to it having full options standard once a year services, safety equipment, being faster than most family size cars and being
more fuel efficient ,how solid the doors shut the fact no one around my area has one i love having a sleeper car.I don,t need to mod it up to make it go or handle.
The fact i did not have to put a sports muffler on it to here it .No mods and still happy 2 years on.
Soo much to love!! Mine has been chipped and has an Exhaust, so the performance is just amazing... The comforts the Polo has are just icing on the cake:
- Heated seats with draws under them (Leather Pack)
- It looks after me: Anyone else notice that it automatically wipes the rear window when you have the wipers on and put the car into reverse?!?!
- Sooo easy to park
- Blue display
- the whistling turbo
- subtle and tasteful design enhancements
- the throaty VROOM! when you turn the key
- red brake calipers
- red stitching on the leather seats and seat belts
- those beautiful denver wheels
- interior design - looks expensive and still better than most new car interiors
- how the doors close with a solid 'thud'. feels like you're enclosed in a tank
- how rare the Polo GTI is
- those three magic letters: GTI
This is probably gonna sound dumb, considering I'm a new Polo GTI owner (right on 4 days now) but I think it's brilliant how whenever you put it into reverse, it automatically switches recirculation mode on to stop any exhaust fumes coming in. Silly I know, but it makes me feel as though my little Polo is going that extra step to look after me.
I love it! I was so happy to be getting one but I can't believe how much happier I am now that I finally have one. Way too much fun!
Having had two GTi's before, VW's have always been my first choice vehicle. When I got my new job, which entails 110km per day, a diesel was the logical choice, but I didn't want to get a standard Polo, and VWSA discontinued the two-door Polo Sportline, so I placed an order for a Cross Polo, and waited, and waited and waited. Seven months later the car arrived and I can honestly say that it was worth the wait. Despite never driving a diesel before and down scaling from a 132kW GTi, the little Cross really impressed me with it driveability and some of the features, like under seat drawers, funky cloth interior, of the Cross Polo and the general solid build and handling characteristics. After just about a month with the car it just impresses me.
I love the attention to detail. Every little thing has been done to perfection. Also love the novelty things like the VW logo in front of the headlights.
