  • Picked up my Polo last Wednesday!

Hi all, thought i'd introduce myself.

I picked up my Polo GTi from Nepean Motor Group in Penrith last Wednesday. It's a 10/05 model with 68,000kms. White and completely stock, rims and all.

It's my second car, my first being a '96 Mazda 323 Astina.

I've got one question though, when I started it this morning at 6:30 (quite cold) my temperature dash light came on. I sat for five minutes waiting for it to warm up, but nothing happened. I sat and wached in amazement at how quickly the revs dropped (being used to my Mazda idling at 1500rpm untill the temp gauge startes to move) I pulled out from the kerb gently and toddled off up the road. The car started to warm up, but the light didn't go away.

Then, I stopped for petrol, when I started the engine, the temp gauge read 90 as it's supposed to, and the light had gone, and stayed off for the trip to work.

The fancy leather bound manual says that this light means either: 1. the coolant is too hot or too cold. 2 the coolant level is low

Has anyone got any ideas as to why the light didn't turn off? Or is this just the way it is?

If it's the temp light, IME they're quite sensitive to coolant level. Maybe a little top up and see how that goes

      Welcome Flip,

If you bought it from a dealer, I'd be ringing them and making it their issue. The POG has quite a lot of sensors and it could be an issue with one of these. Best to flag it up front and let them resolve. Did you get warranty with the vehicle?

Are you planning any mods to the white POG or do you think it will stay stock?

      Enjoy...

If you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for it? PM me if you dont want it public. Interested to see what the going rate is.

You would have warranty on the vehicle so bring it back.

after its sorted, get it chipped.

Mine does the exact same thing, done it 4 times in 2 months.

I think its just the car being overly sensitive, each time the coolant has been on or above minimum and after a quick drive, turn it on/off its gone. I wouldnt panic about it.

Do you park it outside overnight?

this happened to me the other day.

do you park the car on a steep incline? as i did on one particularly cold morning and the light came on for the first time ever (right after a service). parked the car on a flat bit of driveway checked all the fluids reset the car and she was all good.

Yeh, I got it from a dealer in the riff (Penrith). It's a 10/05 manufacture delivered in January '06. It's an ex-Qantas fleet car and has 68,000kms. I paid $18k for it, it was one of the cheapest ones around, not sure why it was so cheap, it has perfect service history and is absolutely immactulate inside and out apart from some minor gutter rash on the rims. Although it is one of the first ones made, and with almost 70,000kms clocked up in just over 3 years it doesn't have low kms. It has a 3yr/175,000km warranty as long as I get it serviced out there every 10,000kms/6months.

It's parked outside while my Mazda is in the garage untill it sells. I washed and polished it, I don't want to ruin it with rain and bird crap etc. My street is perfectly flat, so that isn't a contributor to my coolant level. I'll just let the service people know the problem when I take it in for servicing. The light has only come on once, I think it was just an error in the sensor, otherwise it would happen every morning.

I think youre right mate, I had my dealer have a squiz and they couldnt find anything wrong, did a pressure test and visual check. The sensors probably a bit overly sensitive.

Well congrats on the purchase.. I have a set of GTI rims without gutter rash if your interested.

Make sure you get a tune, its just a must on these cars.

Yeh, I'm not looking at modding immediately as I'm also trying to pay off a unit. But maybe in 12 months time I will look at getting an APR tune or something. They're the blokes to go to yeh?

My driving buddies have a mini cooper s with JCW pack and an XR5 Turbo with a flash tune. I have a 200kg advantage over the mini, and so gaining enough power to beat him down the 1/4mile shouldn't be too difficult, but I'm not even going to attempt to match the handling on the mini, it's insane!

What gains can i expect with an APR chip and no other mods? +25kw and 70nm?

Takes it to 152Kw and 328Nm.

There is also GIAC and Revo. They're all the same power, some have more features then others.

I wouldn't be too sure bout the handling, it's not as flat and pretty as the MINI, but learn to drive it well and you'll keep up easily. To be honest, chipping isn't as important as some make out. In this car it's more about using the power. I've followed many a chipped car up a windy mountain pass and in the tighter turns they just spin the wheels. If you like the drags or standing around at BBQ's talking about your mods, then yeah chipping IS a must.

I assume it's had it's 60,000km major service? I only started having this coolant temp light come on after my 60,000km service and since then it's come on maybe once every 2-3 months. I've filled it up once or twice, when it's looking really low, but mostly it goes away when the coolant level returns to normal.

On the other hand, some people are new to this VW Polo GTI and don't have a clue what they're talking about. It seems we have a major troll on this forum lately, they're best to be avoided when looking for advice. Others have had their cars for more then 3 years and know what they're talking about.

                            It's a guarantee you'll enjoy the car

flip, i recommend waiting a while to get the chip.

personally i did it, managed to hold off for a year before getting it, and after the chip it felt like a brand new car again.

http://www.goapr.com.au will provide you with all the info on power gains for the chip and a few other modifications.

                              welcome to the forum.
