  • Polo GTI gearbox strengthening

Hi crew, I want to start looking into ways and means to strenghen the GTI's gear box and would like your input!!

I was wondering first of all what model our gearboxes? And if that is the same as the MKIV Golf GTI?

And secondly what can be changed or strengthened in the gearbox and approx costs ie. gears/bolts etc?

Thirdly any webshops that may sell these parts?

    Thanks in advance

Seb (bug_racer) knows a bit about them and has a really good contact in sydney he gets to do all his "performance" boxes.. PM him.

Its not the same as a Golf 4 box.
There are 2 gearbox codes used on the POLO GTIs
The diff bolt kit would be a good upgrade if you are cracking the box open.

Polo Gti box is an 02R. Golf Mk4 box is almost identical, bellhousing on the Polo is still the 02J. Rear casing is 02R, thats the difference, rear casing, believe ive been through this at the turn of the year, was going to try and use an 02J to fix but the 02R part was too mashed to do so. 12.9 grade bots are the replacement for the rivets that go out for lunch. Not sure of the kit number , the box i did had them done, diff was peloquin. They might do the bolts. Thats really about it for that box, Polo box does have a stronger centre than the Golf mind you. Any stronger and you will be looking at doing a dog set up. I reckon the bolts are the answer if done right. Box i stripped down after it went out to lunch had the bolts and an LSD. 12.9 grade bolt had let go

pelequin im pretty sure does supply the bolts. they aparently have had similar issues , ever since vw upgraded there ring gear and had to consequently create new bolts to acomidate the differance.

              Hi jimmy,
I have a polo gti box that's goin into a mk1 golf. Just Caddys do an engine/gbox mount kit for 02j. Will this kit fit my gbox?

                  Haha

I was going to start a thread the other day, only thing in my car lacking is traction and i dont see the point in adding a LSD to a weak gearbox, seeing as i plan more power oneday.

I was chatting to Junior about his 02s, he says he is happy with it but other forums say it is a very weak box and even in some standard cars it craps itself.

02m seems like it needs a lot of mods to fit it as the mount is different ie Golf 4. 02m's the clutch and flywheels look very expensive too.
I was looking at some of the Seat forums and thy seem to run 02m's on the Ibizas, so im geussing they mount up similar to a Mk4 Golf.

Is there anything deisel that can withstand torque and fits the Polos ?
                  MODS- TOO MANY

Ask plautos, hes got heaps of power in his engine, last chat we had a few months ago, he was still running the standard gearset without any issues but has since upgraded the gearset.

02m lsd are lot more expensive compared to 02j your better off just getting strengthened gears for 02j

Lsd don't really help with putting down power on straight line more on cornering

Seb reckons the 02j is good for up 350-400 hp once strengthened.
                          Cheaper clutches and cheaper lsd.

I would be interested, my mechanic reckons no way my gearbox is going last just matter of how long

But how do you strengthen it, different gear set, that is $$$$$$$$$
Guessing the VR6 clutches can withstand quite a bit of power, is there any need for a better clutch than that.
I am still using the standard clutch with 70% more power
