Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo Project

Hi guys, i just bought a Polo GTI and i plan to make it go VROOM!
So here is what i am getting installed..
Ordered and waiting K04-25 CHRA and other stuff in the kit (fuel injectors and etc)
Ordered and waiting for PSS 9 coil-over's from Blistein
Looking for either the Porsche 2 piece slotted brakes or the R32 brakes which i wanna get slotted too.. not sure.. Feedbacks?
Custom tuning for the bigger turbo

What is on at the moment is an ECU upgrade, Full Milltek, upgraded CAI, Forge intercooler, Upgraded front rotors and competition pads, some work on suspensions (forgotten), silent blowoff valve, stage 3 clutch kit (to handle K04-25 CHRA) and a Limited Slip Diff.. There are some other stuff... I just can't remember..

Will have to run semi-slicks when project complete..

Please give me feedback as to what i am missing or should also do to my new pocket rocket!

You've done the sort of things I want to do to mine. Who are you getting to do the tune once the turbo is installed. I have a GT28R sitting in my garage but unable to find anyone that can do a custom tune on the Polo's (I don't want a generic tune I actually want a tune customized to my car on the dyno, similar to open ecu).
          Cheers,

          John

Very keen to hear how your project gets along - your mod list is pretty much what I've been working towards on my car (MY07 Polo GTI).

I'm running the PSS9s on my car - it's a great setup though I must admit I don't really use the adjustable part of the suspension at all. I set them to the firmest setting shortly after getting them installed and I haven't changed them since (though if I knew more about which tracks would work best with softer settings I'd probably try that out).

As for brakes, I went down the APR 323mm path. The biggest consideration with that setup is finding wheels that will clear the calipers - I believe that APR now sell some lightweight wheels that will do the trick but I ended up with several sets of Audi TT wheels which work well but are very heavy. I also found the pads that came with the kit were not up to the task when it came to regular track use, but after replacing with some Ferodo pads the brakes are now fantastic.

I'm very keen to hear how you go with the K04 / LSD combination - I've been holding off on the bigger turbo partly because I don't think it'll be much good without an LSD to get the power to the ground. Once I decide to go that way I think it'll be a case of installing K04, LSD, clutch and flywheel all at once.

Decent R-Spec tyres will make a huge difference on the track - the best I have found for this car are Kumho V70A 205/40 17. I'm running the hard compound version at the moment so they've lasted reasonably well (probably about 8 full track days including the NSW Dutton last year).

Please keep us updated with your project build!

Light flywheel (14lb) or super light flywheel (7lb)?

                        Hey Alfie,

                        been there, done that!

Thought we would honor our poor little Polo with a fresh thread: A list of the mods our little baby has had so far: APR K04, software flash, EMCS switching system (including race gas program) High flow transverse manifold Modified intake pipe (39% better flow) Billet steel flywheel & EVO ceramic clutch setup BMC CDA

How did you get over 170kw's at the flywheel on a K03?

Also the stock injectors are plenty big enough for a K04, and the air mass meter, they actually have a heap of headroom left over.

You will see how our car progressed, that we had to redo quite a lot of the stuff once we started hitting the track.

Believe me, you will need a caliper change for any serious track work as well, and also buy the best, stickiest tyres you can.

                          No worries. Thanks for that.
Will be interesting to see how Alfie goes with his.

Also possibly see what APR can offer. Spoken to Guy about options. Will weigh it all up when the time comes.

Back on topic, can't wait to see pics and results when everything's done. This sounds like it's going to be a monster.
                          Cheers,

Personally I think the chassis has too much flex: Strut braces, whilst you're there, swaybars...

Some of the mounts are too flexible for the extra power: Control arm and engine mount bushes.

Sounds like a good project mate, looking forward to some progress news!

Gday hows it going. 170kw at the fly is about 230hp which is said to be the max output for the Ko3s. Sounds like your doing everything the right way.
Let me know how it all goes very interested.
