It's a simple case of mathematics not opinion. I currently have 215's on and there is still about 3-4.5cms of room in total of both inner and outer guard and shock clearance. When you go to a 235 tyre you add 2cms of width so it will come down to offset of your rims in the end to get the perfect fit with no scrubbing.
cant remember, have you got an older or newer version polo?

So you have that clearance when you're not moving with the wheels straight?
I had 225s on and it scraped if I turned the wheels while moving. Stationary it was fine.
