These cars have noisy gearboxes... If everything else about the box is fine I wouldn't let it worry you too much. I've had mine stripped down for the noise issue, and it didn't make a big difference anyway.

To be honest you should let the box slow down when you go to select reverse. So clutch in wait a sec and select. This gives the gears a chance to slow down and will minimise the crunch, Redline may help but mainly helps forward gear syncros mate and bearings with regards to whines.

From what I understand, reverse isn't synced. I use to get crunches all the time in my old car until I started popping her into third before putting into reverse. Force of habit, been doing it ever since I got this car and she hasn't ever crunched.
But I too have the whine in 4th and the rattly sound when the clutch is disengaged. I spoke to the VW mechanic in Abottsford and they assured me that both these sounds are normal. They haven't gotten worse since the day I picked up the car so I've just come to accept it. Since I've now got a history of having reported it previously, I'm not too concerned and it doesn't bother me anymore.sigpic

i wasn't really bothered by it when I mentioned it to them. I was just doing it to cover my ass if something arises in the future. But to my surprise to them something is wrong. So now i don't know what to do. I'm worried if i slack and dont take and something does happen they might tell me its my fault that i didn't take it back. But the sound just doesn't sound too right to me even if it doesn't get worse when you buy quality you excpect quality. Everything else in the car is great except for those two sounds. I have no rattle problems or such but only that sound and it gets to me.

I have both, 4th whine is annoying from 50-60km/h, and the whine disappears out of this speed range, if there is enough throttle, no whine. Just when there is light throttle...
i.e. no whine at 65km / 70km / 80km.
Mild rattle like noise with clutch out in neutral, but only in closed garage... with absolute silence.
My car has 40500km. Revoed since 19000km.06 Polo GTI - REVO Stage 2 = 140kw @ wheels.
06 Golf GTI - Bluefin Stage 1 blacked out with ED30 theme, leather, xenon, etc.

I think the recall was about crunching from first to second and not this issue. Also the oil recall issue was fixed in the 2008 built models.Originally posted by Petrina Polo View PostWasnt their a vehicle recall to fic this?
They did mine 10,000km ago.. just an oil change for the box.

Update
Hi guys, thought to update you on my gearbox noise issue. A month on from when I got the checkup, the dealer gave me a call and told me they managed to get me a car for the duration of the fix. They came over and picked up the car from my place and dropped off an almost brand new Jetta yesterday. Today they gave me an update call and told me they took the gearbox apart and they ordered a new one in and it should be there by Thursday or Friday. I'm very impressed by the follow up from that dealer and would recommend them to anyone. I hope the new gearbox would solve the minor issues it has been causing.

Its a 2006, 1st registered in Oct/Nov.
Seems there were a few changes along the timeline (removal of cat, different offset on wheels) could have been a different (cheaper) gearbox used in the later model ones.
I've only got 12,000 kms on mine, so there is still a good opportunity for this to arise.
