Last service I asked the dealer to check on the whine i hear while cruising in 4th grear (also can be heard in 3rd) and about the whine i hear in neutral (which goes away when the clutch is depressed). Anyway he told me it will take a day to get that done so i booked it in for another day (today). After the check they told me that there is definitely something out of the norm there and that they got the OK from VW Australia to take the gear box apart under warranty. The problem im having is that if i let them do it the car will be there for at least a few days (thats if they have the parts) and that they can't give me a replacement car for more than 2 days which to me is the ultimate in BFS. Any advice on what I should do about that issue. Any advice from people who have had gearbox issues with their Polo GTI on how to deal with VW Aus regarding that issue?
    Misc info:
Car is stock March 2008 built and wasn't part of the gearbox oil recall and has 18,000km on the clock.

Is it a tricky job to change it Jmac? My car has 60k on it now and the gearbox is getting a bit whiney.

Get it fixed while it is still under the warranty - sooner, better. Unless you're going to trade it in before the warranty runs out.

              Hey there mate,

I was contemplating changing my gearbox oil on my polo TDI to redline MTL, do you think that this would be suitable? Also would you be able to give us a how to? That would be awesome.

              Cheers,

              Jason

I wanna get it fixed asap but the problem is I can't really afford to rend a car for a week or two because of VWs **** ups. The car is basically new and its had that issue since day one. And ive mentioned it to them more than once and only this time they react. I see no reason why i have to incur the expense of renting a car at my own cost because VW have sold me a faulty new car.

I think that is crap too - I find that getting a car really depends on the dealer - some are pretty flexible in terms of giving you a car and some are VERY tight. Perhaps find a different dealer who is willing to give you a car? Also, I think if you have been back to VW for servicing, or are well known to buy a new car every 3 years off them, then they are more likely to look after you with a car, where as if you just go back for warranty they are less likely to look after you.

My GTI has got the same problem as yours Y2008.

I took mine to VW and they claimed there is nothing wrong (bull****).
Wasnt satisfied with what they said, so i took it to my mechanic and he said it could be my wheels bearings.

VW changed my wheels bearings yesterday under warranty but the bloody whine is shill there!!!

                      What should i do next??

                        John Hughes or Ossie Park??

If its John Hughes, complain to John Hughes directly...he takes his customer service seriously and will help you - the dealership VW crew there are not that helpfull sometimes but big John sorts em out when you get onto him

the first time i told them about it they said they checked and there is nothing wrong (one dealer). The second time they said there is something wrong but they can't tell whats wrong exactly. So it seems like they are one big mess. I've had that whine since new. And same for the rattle/whine sound when the car is in neutral (goes away when i press the clutch). The thing is neither of them has gotten worse over time which is comforting me a bit as i dont feel like anything could happen suddenly. I really don't know what to do with them at the moment either. But my main aim now is to get them to either give me a replacement car or pay for a rental for me (at least id be sure they wouldn't slack and take their time working on it). I'm happpy they took the time to check the problem and they were very professional about it. They didn't have a replacement car that day so they actually took me home and came and picked me up when the car was ready. But still that doesn't help me in any way when it comes to the car being there for how ever long it would take them to take the gearbox apart and check it. I think you should take it back to them and mention that you know someone who has the same problem and that their dealer agrees that there is an issue there. Also VW Australia have accepted the matter as a warranty issue which to me says that they know about the issue because otherwise they wouldn't have done anything.

                            Thanks for the tip Bumpknuck

this redline gear sounds like the goods. mioght have to look into i think. my transmission is making wining noises but disappears the moment i put my foot on the clutch.it seems a lil strange, i havnt particularly abused the gear box at all, i think ive missed a gear only once after a week of owning it. though only seems to do it in 4th oddly enough.
