without starting a chip war here im surprised that the australian market isnt a bit more competetive. i mean really how hard is it to import software and a ecu reflash device,....dead easy.nice work scotty, how do they fare price wise on the uk market? are they competetive?

Different company's have different ways of accessing the Flash tune info...Some have to establish a connection with a server in another country, and the tune is downloaded from there and directly into the ECU, and is specific to that VIN (ie; VIN locked) of the car that is tuned. Others download a number of tunes to specific cars (eg 5), then have to but more once they have used them. Then you have the way Scotts one was done.Originally posted by mikepologti View Postwithout starting a chip war here im surprised that the australian market isnt a bit more competetive. i mean really how hard is it to import software and a ecu reflash device,....dead easy.nice work scotty, how do they fare price wise on the uk market? are they competetive?

seangti- yes, i have to get it on the dyno soon. just waiting for a little bit of help from k-rudd (also trying to put away for season pass park entry new board etc etc before july ach!!!). im keen to know the atf hp, and then, subsequently atfw. as far as i understand, overfuelling in a diesel isnt really too problematic- ever heard of those "tuning boxes" or "diesel power boxes"? those essentially show the car as being underfuelled post-ecu (e.g. via a 900ohm resistor in the case of the 'evry mod' (lots about that on tdiclub.com), and in the case of josh's diesel power tuning box, with the assistance of a microprocessor), thus compensating and adding more fuel. my understanding is because diesels dont have a throttle, power is wholly dependent on amount of fuel injected, and overfuelling will simply result in additional smoke (wasted power, some would say) which can be combatted by adding more air. the first mod that MANY with mk4 tdi golfs and jettas, on tdiclub, do, is fuel injectors with larger holes. indeed, many of those guys add injectors and subsequently get more power AND smoke, and they get rid of the smoke later on by upping the boost by way of remap. i dont think its really an issue with diesels.
mike- its really interesting how chippeduk do it vs. others like Oettinger. my understanding is that its the same thing- in the case of Oettinger, according to dean at volkspower, its a case of hooking up computer to obd port and having car flashed real time via the internet, through what i'd imagine would be a vendor's account, with Oettinger. essentially, ChippedUK do the same thing, but rather, they work on the maps on their own AFTER they have verified your serial number(on back of handset) and recieved your stock map, and then send the maps back to you, based on your stock map. map sizes for all three maps, for me, were only 513kb each in size-way smaller than i thought they'd be. i'd imagine that part of the 45mins it takes to get reflashed at volkspower, for example, would be them downloading your original map (7-10 mins), writing your new map (30 mins or so), then uploading new map to ecu (another 5-10 mins).
pricewise, i believe chippeduk are reputed to be pretty competetive over in the uk. as far as i have read, their rolling road remaps are somewhat popular-plenty of forums offering group buy rolling roads at 150gbp, and i believe they also offer a remapping service direct to your home- they come round and do the read-remap thing on your driveway. another popular company that i have read about is JabbaSport, and their remaps are supposed to be #### hot. one guy with same car as me (although looks much prettier with rims, lowered etc) dynoed 160+hp atf with seat and k&n, and more than 390nm.
I think as far as competition goes, they are pretty competetive and reputed to be legit over there- as far as i understand, however, they're not crazy on their advertising and global expansion- Jayson founded ChippedUK, and just established his kart racing team in the offices next door, which takes up his time aswell, iirc. enough googling will find you a mk5 thread where Jayson gets abit fed up with the skepticism and crap talking ("ive never heard of you before, unless you mail me full warranty to peruse at my leisure, which im entitled to request as a potential customer, i think you're a dud tuning company"), and decides to introduce himself and his operation. its nice to see pics of professional offices with big "chippeduk" metal lettering behind the secretary's desk, as well as not only vw's and audis, but also porsches and lamborghini gallardos lining up for the temp/humidty controlled dyno, as well as Jaysons daily on the dyno (a 360 Modena cabriolet).
I dont think i really went out on a limb- its just that they havent really got their foot in the door here in terms of numbers. in terms of reviews, however- i know of atleast 3 golf 5's who have been chipped with them, aswell as a tiguan from this forum, and now me. in terms of reviews, we're all happy campers.
i think i just crapped on alot. what can i say- im stoked.
and josh- what kinda places are close to you? e.g. what major roads? we should go for a spin this week sometime. my number is <sent pm> if you wanna shoot me a text when you're not online.
i was thinking out mt dandy way, or otherwise, yarra blvd= FUN!
p.s. philthy- their track map will add more. if you DO go down this route, i'd suggest going the way i did- get fast road, and track map. just a suggestion, but i wouldnt bother with economy map- the gt tdi guys who have been chipped with ChippedUK say that they dont even use the economy map as its more economical on fast road anyway, one guy even said with the savings he is experiencing on fast road map, he's going to have paid off the $800 for the unit, within a year.Last edited by Buller_Scott; 16-04-2009, 02:32 AM.

sorry guys!
been offline half a week- hangin out with my old man before he goes back to work in indonesia......
lol R1 crasher- as i said, i wont slag tuning companies unless i have used them myself and can do back to back comparisons, but damn, i cant just say "its terrific value for money at $800" because i would have been willing to pay the $1300-$1500 premium that i was getting ready for either a revo or giac tune (did my research and according to some uk/irish/scottish boys on tdiclub, chippeduk is legit, didnt want revo as with switcher thingy it would have added 300aud or whatever and apparently their maps are generic one-map-for-all-cars, and never heard of a giac chipped diesel polo or golf?). me and the old man went for a drive on monday, out the back of Yea, check this:
between where i have marked, is a HUGE hill, it has the fun, twisty stuff, but despite the fun aspect, its a big fuggin hill. my dad was driving the whole time and he was trying to kill my car (the good way, not through negligence), and it was about a 5k run that rose roughly 400m vertical, but my car killed it like it was on the flats. my old man was having too much fun at the time to say anything, but after we got up top, he was like "god damn, scott- that is a fugging big hill, that is a really, really big climb, but it was a piece of piss for this. my v8 discovery would have really struggled up there".
he did a comparo coming out of melbourne- stock map for about 20 clicks, planting it in different gears etc. then, we loaded race map, and as a passenger, the difference was awesome.
im proud of the car as on stock map, it really is a capable little hatch in my opinion, but on race, phhhwoooah. fun.
only downside is it REALLY emphasises the rolling and squatting. so, suspension MUST come next.
i've changed the map back to fast road for daily commuting- i have found that the race map for around town can be abit impractical with all the start stopping and heat soak in the smic, i dont really get the best out of race map. additionally, any foot-planting done= a reminder just how bad stock suspension is
but on fast road, the power deliver is abit smoother (less "pow bitch!" aggressive) and the suspension sag in the back isnt so horrible-fast road is great for in town commuting-basically like a smoother but more powerful map of stock map(30kw/75nm), and its just abit more comfortable (not necessarily faster or torquier) than race.
on weekends, or on "CBF going to work tonight so imma go for a drive'' times, whats the first thing i do? during a coffee and a smoke, get race map loaded.
cheers

Oh, And I Forgot My First Fight......
i forgot about my first fight
i had my first official fight last night, unfortunately it was not in race map, but fast road.
rude . was in a convertible travelling in the lane left of me on Dandenong Road city bound(about 2 car lengths behind me), and we could both clearly see that his lane was blocked by parked cars about 150+ meters up ahead-he had already started indicating whilst behind me. it was in the 70km/h zone, we were both doing about 65.
rather than slow down and slot in behind me, which he could have comfortably and safely done, he figured he'd overtake my little girls car on the inside- i saw him pop forward and i did the same shortly after(how did i know he was going to try to overtake me on the inside like a tool?).
his bonnet jumped up to my back wheel (my delayed reaction time), and stayed there for a few seconds as we were both planting it- i dont care what anyone says, under normal inner city driving conditions, he wouldnt have stayed in that same spot for that period of time, with his lane coming to a close, unless he was still, still trying to get past.
i eased off the accelerator to let him draw level, so i could look at him and mouth at him ''what the hell are you doing jackass?''
we locked eyes for a second and then he tried to do it again- this time we both moved forward at the same time as the go signal was pretty much in the eyes.
well, guess whose bmw 325ci convertible tried up till the last 40 meters or so to get past, then had to slam on the brakes, only to come around the other side of me and give me the evil death stare (i let him, i wanted to see exactly what he was driving for reference)??
yup yup. im happy with ChippedUK. very.
p.s. just for reference- his nose never caught mine. in a situation like that, with someone that arrogant and quite frankly, wreckless, i always presume that if they are willing to behave in that manner, then they are willing, even with their nose just a half meter infront of mine, to merge and have me move out of their way in fear of being hit by them by being in their blind spot.(it happens all the time). had his drivers door got past mine, i would have conceded defeat and slowed down so i dont have him crash into me.
shame it wasnt so simple for him.....
no, i dont drive a fast car, but i hope y'all enjoyed the story, because i just spent a while writing it instead of working, lolLast edited by gtimk5; 22-04-2009, 07:22 AM.

And you will find that the majority on this forum do not condone street racing or hooning.
By the way a convertible, no matter what brand is significantly heavier than the normal car that they were designed off.
Glad you like your chip,
