Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions. When I'm crusing along at whatever speed (be it 60, 80, or 100), and the engine is at about 2000 or so rpm in 5th, I let my foot off the accelerator, and I get a howling sound from the transmission. As soon as I apply the slightest of throttle, it goes away, even though its still doing the same rpm. Is this just part of the pogos character? Or should I notify VW at my next service?

you say howling, which to me means it's quite loud -- is it?
if it's just a whirring sound, then i've been assured that this is quite normal. another one of those things i was freaking out about when i first picked her up.sigpic

I get the sounds as well, in the same conditions pretty much....
But it is only a slight sound, I assumed it was just transmission noise and nothin 2 worry about....T Go

Its considered normal by VW. Mine did it from about 4000km until I sold it at 23000km. I even had the factory rep listen to it after complaining to the dealer.
I then drove the press test Polo (The red 1 in the magazines) and it was far worse. My gbox was smooth and never gave any problems. Smoothness further improved when Jimmy did the Redline gbox oilchange for me.
It never got any worse during the 19000km I drove with it. I figured mentioning it to VW meant it was on their system and if something did break I'd have record of complaints.

Mine has similar but not the same. On light throttle with 4th gear, between 50-60km/h (which probably equates to around 2000rpm), it makes whining / humming noise. It has not been getting louder since I got the car at 18000km. Now it's almost done 40000km and has not changed.
I had a 2008 model (mine is 2006) for a curtesy car, and at 200km at odometer, it also made similar noise, but much quieter.
I think this noise varies. I took it to two different dealers, and they couldn't tell me exactly why and told me this is a normal variation. Gearbox oil has been changed numerous times I think already about 3 times. I had a factory one, then some new VW oil (wonder which), then I tried Redline ML90 as recommended by Jimmy and back to VW gearbox oil.
The shift is reasonably good. The noise didn't change much with changing to different type.
Oh yes, and my car has been chipped from 19000km.
My warranty ran out, and I just keep my fingers crossed it doesn't get worse.

now its AWD only for me ....... if only I can make up my mind ....
Q5/Tiguan for me untill the R20T arrives when I'll trade the d@mn RAV in on it and my wife will take the Q5/Tiguan in its place. Though will probably end up driving the RAV with her taking immediate delivery of the Q5/Tiguan.
Imagine 200+kw and AWD in a family SUV .....and 200+kw and AWD in a hatch for me .....
