$1200 with Kumho Ecsta KU31 which seem pretty good from various reports.
Think this setup would look pretty kick ass on the slightly low red car, but concerned about making the ride harsh...
Can anyone who has lowered their car before changing to 17" comment on the change in ride comfort? I know this would be rim / tyre / spring setup specific, but after some opinions.
Go 18s... ride is not that bad.. Its a bit harder than the stock wheels but not gonna kill you. The look of the car is much better. 17s should have come stock on that car.

its only okay if you live where the roads are perfect - hit one pothole with 215/35/R18 tyres and you will know why it isnt the wisest thing to do going with 18's - i lost three tyres within 6 months - and using a profile higher then 35 will affect your gearing ratios and hence cause your gearbox to go haywire
18's on a polo look good but are a waste of time and money IMHO ( purely my own subjective opinion - use it, dont use it whatever)

Where do you live? I live in sydney and there is a blend of good roads and average roads. Nothing to trouble the 18s. I have a 35 tyre on it and no probs.
Unless you go offroading then 18s are fine and look the goods over a 17 inch wheel which in my opinion doesnt give a look much better than the stock 16s. Bear in mind many smaller cars are coming out with 17s standard.

i live in Durban, South Africa - our roads used to be better than most australian roads but they are doing lots of (unneccesary in certain parts IMHO) repairs for the upcoming FIFA soccer world cup hence it wasnt exactly potholes but there were holes in the road which normal tyres would soak up easily - i lost three tyres (pirreli P0's which as you would imagine are pretty expensive)
17's are still okay cos its a 40 profile - the 35 profile just allows the side wall to be pinched between the edge of the wheel and the edge of the pothole - and my incidents all happened in central town - no off roading involved - not a single incident since changing my rims and tyres to 17's - plus with the weight of the 18's ive had to have the gearbox replaced (thankfully that gearbox problem was a common thing so it was done under the warranty) but mine was accelerated and exaggerated by the 18's - since the wheel change - no real gearbox problems to report
the 18's are going to be fine until you come across a bad road and voila unexpected sidewall damage which renders the tyre useless - all three tyres i had a problem with it was always the sidewall that got damaged - so absolutely no chance of a repair
plenty more Polo's here then anywhere else in the world besides Germany (its intermittently been the best selling car here for a while) and everyone who has tried 18's here has always gone back a step down back to 17's - a few of our local VWClub members told me about the problem - and i reckoned i was always on good roads - till the guys decided to start digging up those roads - and then funny thing - two weeks after the official roadworks are completed our second national telecoms operator decides to dig a few of them up to lay cable infrastructure - so the roads here are basically getting all redone but while thats happening its hell on fancy wheels and tyres
