Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have the APR Diverter valve and it doesnt stop the surge..

its the wastegate.. The N75 bleeds to early on.. gotta stop the flow to it..

hence my little contraption... It cant be bad thing as if worst comes to worst, ill leave it completely open as it would be stock..

Its dodgy because you might find a good setting on day 1.... day 15 comes along and it has vibrated to a different position and has a leak up the valve stem. Ball valves can also be blown open if you dump enough flow into them, hence will alter your setting.

Ok if you think so. Im sure plenty of Jap cars out there would disagree with you. As this was recommended to me by a car tuner for how good they are, hey what would he know. It must be dodgy.

Boost controller must really be crap if they can hold 15psi.

Most are a piston but the R1 may be a diaphragm I can't remember.

i think from memory the forge one was piston based as well , but better build quality.and im pretty sure your right about the r1 dv, i think its diaphram based.
thanks for the info, you just talked me into a r1 in the near future.

Yes I do think so I have a general rule of thumb, if I can buy it at Bunnings, it doesn't go near my GTI. My Mk3 is a different issue hehehe.

Mate, not sure what you mean about a boost controller. They are designed for this, I'm talking about something you get from Bunnings as per the original post. I totally agree a boost controller which has an actuator attached to a valve will hold the ball or gate in a desired position, if you have a free handle, its free to do whatever it wants. Do you really want to be driving along and have the valve vibrate open of its own accord?

A few things I have noticed the R1 do very well is that it holds boost a lot better through out the rev range and when you take your foot off during gear changes the air is routed to the turbo which keeps it spinning and it virtually eliminates turbo lag completely. The effect it has far surpasses anything I could imagine it would and it still takes me by supprise. It speeds up accelerating immensely and smoothes it out. The other thing I have noticed is that boost seems to come in around 1500RPM instead of the 1950-2000RPM stock range. Next to the K&N panel filter I reckon its probably the next best performance mod.

                Hi,,

the valve per the picture I posted is not from bunnings.. Its for compressors and its built to withstand 130psi... I dont think owe little turbos will worry the valve much at all.. Its not flimsy like you think..

Worst case, the pressure can only push the valve open which just makes it like stock...

I think it has merit.. I tried it on my car and no surge at all.. Is it safe?? thats another story..

Yea its good you are aware of this, that was what I was getting at. It might be fine for X days/months, but eventually you will need to look at it again in the future. That's why I suggested a restrictor because its set and forget, its what you're happy with.

I fully closed the valve and all the boost disappears... if I half close the valve all is ok but the difference isnt great..

                    How can the boost disappear...
