My GTI came with a full sized alloy spare. I swapped it into the tyre rotation schedule.

Meant I only had to buy one new tyre when the fronts were worn out

If you have got one you might as well use it.

I like to have two spares. I can put tyres on them & rotate 6 wheels instead of 4, or have 2 spares incase of curbing or other damage. Sometimes it can be very hard to find replacements when needed in a hurry.

I have 2 spares for the Polo and have been working on Solitaire VW Spares for a good price on more for the Golf V.
