anyone got any idea on labour costs for this to be put in..I'm guessing the entire engine needs to be lifted to gain access to the neccessary areas?
    Thanks

Sorry Duncan I feel like I've highjacked your thread but now I am confused. Earlier a few of you guys incl Gavin & blitzen said the ECS clutch as listed was the one to use but now you guys say you can't use it? I think another fella mentioned that was the one he has bought for his polo?
Those 2 I mentioned are listd for a range of vehicles incl the 1.8T for the mk4 which is not a vr6. I am well confused now. LOL

The Engine dose not have to be lifted out for this job. The Engine only has to be supported, and the gearbox dropped/ moved to gain access to the clutch assembly.
You don't need a new flywheel, you merely have to get the stock one machined in readiness for the new clutch so it has better 'bite' on the flywheel. We are talking about a new flywheel as the standard duel mass flywheel is poo, and it is worth changing to a single mass item.
As for pricing for a new clutch and labour...As I said on the previous page, I was quoted $875 for a new clutch with flywheel machining and labour at Penrith Clutch and Brake, in Penrith NSW. The cluch used was an Exedy item, which goes for about $430.

The Mk4 GTI clutch kit you can use...
The Mk3 VR6 clutch can be used, but you need a Mk3 4CYL Flywheel.

I still think there is some confusion happening on this thread. Someone is going to buy the wrong bits if we are not careful.

You DON'T need a flywheel, if you just replace the clutch with the same kind as you take out. This is the standard 220mm set up with the dual mass flywheel. The clutch plate is solid and the cover has the springs in it.

You DO need a flywheel and it HAS to come from cable change gearbox 4 cylinder VW. It doesn't matter if it's a G60, ABF or some other but it MUST be a 4 Cylinder. The Clutch that goes with this the best for an off the shelf kit is the VR6. This kit will have a sprung plate and a solid cover.

I went into Australian Clutch Services this arvo and I am going back tomorrow. I'll get prices for as many combinations of clutches for the Polo/1.8T motors as possible. I am taking in a flywheel and will see about having them made up too. They used to do Fidanza ones until the dollar went to ****.

The kit I bought was a KVW23002HD which was $800 inc GST, with that I fitted a G60/ABF flywheel from Golfloon.

              I'll be back soon.

                Jesus Christ thats steep!!...

Cheers for the help Gavin I'm sorry if I have confused some people, I am just going off the research I have done, and people I have spoken to. I double checked with Exedy that the MK4 Golf GTI clutch assembly fit the Polo GTI, as I was a bit skeptical.
I'm just going to see how my clutch goes, then look at getting an ECS item from the States, or look at getting an Exedy one. I just can't justify paying that amount of coin for the clutch assembly itself($800)

I dont think he ment that was the price for the kit he is pricing for the polo boys, thats just what he paid for the one in my car.

Yeah mate it was more money and I got pinged speeding to go get the bearing they forgot to put in the box!!

But as Jimmy has an ECS kit coming that is costing 900 and I paid 150 for a lightened flywheel, I don't consider it that bad. Plus it would cost me 2 dollars to go back there if it went wrong.

It was also going to cope easily with the power i was going after. They have cheaper options which I'll be pricing up tomorrow hopefully, that will cope with a chipped motor with a std turbo.

Ok I think I got you guys now. But to tell you the truth a lightend flywheel does kinda interest me. As well as a better functioning clutch you would also get a power gain due to there being not as much rotational mass in the flywheel resulting in better power to the ground.
