Having one delivered at the moment from ECS around $900 delivered. This is stage one. 14ibs flywheel, 228 vr6 plate and uprated pressure plate. Was cheaper but the exchange rate has us at the moment. Ill post pics when it arrives. I would also recommend fitting an original release bearing when doing so..
Cheers

Krikey...oh well at least I wasn't imagining it.
Bumpknuck ur right that would've been a funny one if you took it for a drive.
Shaneth, you mentioned you just put a newie in, would really appreciate some details..I know you would have done your research.
This has only happened once and I have only driven 30k and been chipped for one year. Should I expect this to occour again in the near future..should I drive a bit more conservatively? oh and I was saving up for a FMIC...

Mate, you can try and baby it for a while, but it is just going to get worse, and you will need a new one sooner rather than later.

hmmm...ok what would the install costs be? How long can I expect a new one to last only 30,000km? ur right tho...guess it can't be to safe having this happen too often as well.
I cut him a deal on the one from my Audi A3. Which I paid $150 for the flywheel and $800 for the clutch kit from ACS in Adelaide.
The plate itself was an LUK one and the cover was the expensive bit IMO. It was painted purple!!
I had thought of getting the stage 1 from ECS but figured at the time with shipping and stuff, there wasn't enough of a saving to be had if anything went wrong.
A std VR clutch is supposed to be good for 300HP and 300lbs of torque.

I was looking at getting a standard VR6 flywheel off Golf Loon which should do as if my calculations are right 300lbs is 406nM which you should be enough. otherwise it would be a ecs one. you will also be getting rid of a dual mass flywheel for a single mass one. which may give some noise in neutral but nothing major.

I was looking at ECS clutch kits today...
Stage One MK4 GTI 1.8T W/Lightened flywheel(14lb) is $506 before shipping.
Stage One MK3 VR6 W/Lightened Flywheel, not much less than that. Shipping won't be anything major, as I may have something sorted there.

translators, translators....do we have anyone speaking english here?? he,he,he just kidding..I know I'm the one with the language problem. I feel a bit "simple" when it comes to issues under the hood - should I say I learn as I go. DP and HFC, Seat air intake, FMIC I understand but never had a clutch issue before. Time to do some research....oh help which one is the clutch anyway thats the one I use to stop right? Maybe its the thing I use to let other people know I;m turning left?
dont just take it for granted that its wear and tear, mine went at 25 K
due to and oil leak into the clutch
defective clutch is covered till 40 000KM by VW
and warranty will cover all problems... like the one i had
and remember if you have a full motor plan/motion plan/service plan, it also covers wear and tear on clutch for the full duration of the plan
Yeah thats true but we are talking about a chipped Polo so its not a stretch to think that VW would definately deny any sort of warranty claim with the clutch. Fact is that its a pretty poor clutch even in stock form. Well I believe it to be anyway.
Jmac you're paying $900 for the ECS stage 1 clutch and blitzen you reckon its about $500 - don't tell me they're charging $400 for shipping? That's pretty hefty one would think?! But what would we be paying here in Oz for a similar clutch? Also does anyone have an idea of what sort of labour costs its likely to be to have a new one installed?
Blitzen is this the clutch that fits the polo? - ECS - VW Stage 1 Clutch Kit (228mm) With Light Weight Steel ECS 14lbs Flywheel, 225-275hp ES#125
There is also this one with heavier flywheel - ECS - VW Stage 1 Clutch Kit (228mm) With Light Weight Steel ECS 20.5lbs Flywheel, 225-275hp ES#250303
With a lighter flywheel you can expect a power increase too especially the 14lbs flywheel. Not only greater clamping power but also an increase in power to the wheels. Would be well worth it I'm thinking.
Also for the uninitiated I take it that a single mass clutch is better than a duel?
Mozzy, the ECS Clutch price was a direct translation from USD to AUD. I didn't apply for shipping at this stage, as I may have another way of getting it here. It really wouldn't surprise me that shipping would cost that much due to US shipping being all over the place, and just the weight of the kit itself, including the flywheel. Exedy are charging about $430 for their direct replacement clutch kit. I was Quoted $875 for a clutch replacement with flywheel machine with an Exedy Clutch from Penrith Clutch And Brake in NSW, but the accident meant I had to spend my money somewhere else!!
I'm going with what Exedy Clutches Australia told me. According to them, the Part number for the Polo GTI Clutch is the same as the one for the MK4 Golf GTI. Going on that info, I transcribed that to the ECS MK4 GTI Clutch fitting the Polo GTI.
Sorry about listing the full VR6 kit...It should have just been the Clutch kit, less the Flywheel.
I am up for a clutch in the very near future. Even if the clutch is warranted by VW up to 40,000km, I wouldn't want such a weak clutch in my car again.
