I am tipping $900+, no point saying you should not have accepted as it's too late, just scrutinise that bill very closely.

If you are taking it to one particular dealer near you, Id be happy they don't set your car on fire......

What about just getting the pads changed at a standard brakes place?

That's what I was thinking of doing. The front pad warning light just came on in my car this morning.

Which places do you guys recommend?

Was just over at Nepean Motor Group. I was Quoted...
        1 hr labour...$130.00
        Front Pads...$98.59.
        Front Rotors...$124.65 each.
        These prices are OEM...

Assuming you are only doing the fronts, if you are paying more than $500, I would be asking some serious questions.
The fact they couldn't give you a price over the phone before they started the job tells me something very dodgy, and I wouldn't be going back there.

hey all, thanks for your replies and concerns

The dealer I use is Hornsby VW, the cost was $325, including:
            - New front pads
            - Labour
            - Disc machining

Pretty good considering they washed my car aswell

I think they couldnt tell me how much it would be, because other parts may need changing aswell, that would affect the overall price. An estimate woulda been nice but. oh well, all good!

That's pretty fair - yeah an estimate would have been nice but I haven't heard too many bad things about Hornsby VW either.

                    Front pads.

                    $20 (cost to them)
Machining. (Nothing to them. But ill say 5 dollars for the sake of replacing the machine bit.

So thats $300 labor. For somthing which could take a non lazy mechanic 45mins.

                    VW pricing is cheap!

Pads cost $20 to the dealership??? Freighted anything from overseas lately? Or within Australia??

Machining cost - nothing??? Purchased a lathe lately that can do them?

The non-lazy mechanic could, of course, get he brakes for less than $20, fire up the free lathe he has, measure the brakes with the free micrometer, to remain legal (he got the specification book for nothing too) then machine them, refit all, bleed the brakes with the free fluid he undoubtedly has on hand ........

And he would have done the job for nothing, and paid you a couple of hundred for allowing him to do them for you.

My warning light just came on yesterday ( 53k on the clock ). Just rang for a price check and was told $528 for pads, labour and New rotors.

Was quite suprised that they said they just replace the rotors rather than machining them. Every car I have ever owned I have never had to have rotors replaced

Is your GTI still under warranty?

That lifespan doesn't suprise for stock rotors. I'd have to check receipts, but I think my DBA front rotors are $160 a corner, front remsa pads I think $90, fluid for $45 than labour.

I paid $450 at brakes plus a few weeks back for machining of the front rotors and labour only for replacement of rear rotors ($130 a corner), rear pads ($70), fluid flush ($45), and engine oil flush ($110 for oil and filter), as I suppied ALL parts.

So that price sounds pretty good after my rectal gouging. haha, gross.

including 4 rotors, that seems cheap for dealership pricing

you could measure your disks, if they've lost more than a few mm total, then technically they're out of spec. I think once my 312's have lost 1mm per side, guide says they should be replaced. Seems crazy for such big discs.
