Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Turbo Bolts?

    Hey

My g/f was driving on the weekend - there's my problem

When changing into 1st or reverse at stand still - don't remember - there was a big clunk and it felt like the engine shook a bit...

Now... when I get to about 4000 rpm I have a slight rattle when the turbo really gets going - like a thin piece of metal rattling around.

Could that be the turbo bolts coming loose or bending and the gasket rattling around?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It could be a broken engine mount, this normally causes a clunk on engaging gear. At high revs the engine vibes could cause the broken mount to resonate and make a racket

Sound seemed non-existent this morning. I blame hot weather for the moment.

Must be the SR20DET shaking itself loose from the custom engine mounts.

This sounds like a mount and not the turbo. I had this on a Mk4 Gti, Gearbox alloy mount was cracked and eventually snapped and then the engine made the rattle like you mention with excessive movement/flex due to the mount being broken
                          Cheers
