  • Thrust bearing noise

Hi guys I did a search but nothing found

The CFO@ my house and I bought a new Polo GTI 2 months ago.
I only get to drive it occasionally coz she wont give me the keys too often
but tonight whilst at the lights I noticed the distinctive whir of a noisy thrust bearing.
As this is the first time I have had a chance to hear it I'm unsure of how long its
been there or if its always been there
and like most of the fairer sex cant hear anything,(probably would drive with 3 wheels if the stereo was loud enough to cover the noise)

but has anyone else experienced this?

I have this same sound, and I have had it for the whole time I have had the car(I actually said this to my old man when I picked up the car 11 months ago). It only happens to me when the car is in Neutral and when the clutch is not depressted. Once the clutch is depressed, the sound goes away.
My mate also has the same sound on his MK4 Golf GTI. As far as I'm concerned, it is nothing to worry about.
I have been told from a few sources that is normal, and nothing to worry about. The sound hasn't got any worse, and I don't even notice it any more.

Yeah goes away when I release the clutch, I've had to replace a few thrust bearings in a few of my cars over the years that's how I know what it is.

But if its normal then I'll leave it be.

        Thanks for your help

I noticed this sound within the first week after taking delivery. I went straight to the dealer and the mechanic came out to have a listen. Can't remember exactly what he said it was, only that it is totally normal.

I have the same sound. Had it since about 4000km and now have done 22000km with no problems.

Pointed it out to VW and they said its normal. Drove 2 VW demos and they both had it. 1 was far worse than mine!

It will be fixed when I upgrade the clutch ... or ... if it deteriorates I'll fix it by upgrading the clutch ....

BUGGER I was afraid someone would have a story like this.

Well, i specifically told them i thought it was the thrust bearing, they inspected it and decided it wasnt and think its something inside the gearbox... i'm not 100% convinced but what the hell they're willing to pull it out and inspect it etc and were really good about it.

my car has done it since new with no problems, and im inclined to believe its just the nature of the gearbox, but i'll let everyone know how it goes and whether its worth mentioning.

                    Hey Guys,

Have just been advised by VW that my car is receiving all new bearings and even a new gear. So if anyone hears a noise when the clutch is engaged (no foot on pedal) and the car is in neutral, it is probably worth mentioning.

                      Thanks for the update.
have they given a reason why they are changing something that they claim
                      is normal (obviously its not)
