The hand held units are called Lidar (Or Lydar, not sure which), according to a fella in the highway patrol i know.

My demerits were not being a ****head on the roads, they were honest mistakes (missing speed signs, u-turns, not braking down hill). And... I've learnt my lesson.

Getting a radar detector means you intend to be a ****head but don't want to pay the price for it.

Not at all, I've had 1 fine in 5 years ...... and that was coasting down a steep hill .... which means I'm pretty much paying attention to my surroundings and not being a ****head.

Having a detector will have no effect on my driving style, all it will mean is that I will be able to stop worrying about pathetic policies and practices ALL the time when driving.

Nobody can tell me they overtake on the highway and stay within the speed limit. No copper cares if you were overtaking and if you were doing 140km/h in a 100zone overtaking a truck etc trying to make your exposure to oncoming traffic as small as possible AND you get caught it is an automatic 6 month suspension and 8 points.

Driving irresponsibly is being a ****head and that includes so much more than only speeding.

Kai, how much for the Beltronics STI unit? Is it definitely undetectable?

I agree Sharkie. I was recently done for doing 54km/h in a 50km/h zone at 7.28am, with no schools, shops, high traffic, elderly etc around. That cost me $142 and one demerit point. I can safely say I wasn't posing any more of a risk than an elderly person driving their Toyota Corona at 48km/h. Geeze it makes me mad. I would have no problem if I was being a ****head or presenting any type of risk, but this is blatant revenue raising at its finest.

May or may not stay within the speed limit, but if I got caught I wouldn't have anything to complain about and is there really a need to do 30+ over the speed limit? If the truck is speeding... why do you need to overtake?

Just had a thought ...... since the exhaust is pretty much hidden from :ballandchain: I can pretty much do both .... 1 in secret and the other 1 openly.

AND if she finds out it is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

an exhaust you get to use all the time, even if yr parked, idling, whereas the detector only gets used if yr doing something wrong.

But from the other perspective, $ spent now on a detector may well pay for the exhaust in saved fines...

Now you're catching on, Johan. I've got "Jimmy's" FMIC in my garage (for safe keeping while he's up north) and lower honey-comb grills arriving in the mail soon (quick! ... anyone! ... explanation! Why do I HAVE to have these? )

It was meant to have it from the factory, but they did not have stock at the time they built your car and used lesser Polo parts instead. And it is VW sending it to you now after you reminded them that they still owed it to you way back from when you bought the car ......

Excellent ... good story, Johan. 'A+' marks. And then when :ballandchain: asks ... I just show her a pic of your front end and say: "See!"
