Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polo 9N3 GTI Gearbox codes

    Hey all,

I'm in process of maybe swapping in another gearbox to my GTI, and there are a few out there,
Was wondering if anyone has ever determined if you can work out from the actual codes on the box if its a:

    HWY or JDB

I know it would be on sticker in car's logbook, but once this is lost forever, how do you tell?

    Cheers

There should be the same sticker in the boot around the sparewheel well. Lift the carpet up.

If you register and login with erWin Volkswagen AG erWin Online you can see all the codes applicable to your vin (including the gearbox code). May cost you a few Euros though.

yep its stamped on the box. The boxes are interchangeable though so no issue putting in an HWY in place of the JDB or vice versa.

Thanks, but my GTI and a few others I've looked at don't have the sticker in the boot..
But also, I'm looking at gearboxes that aren't attached to a car

              Cheers

Yes, can now confirm, the reference codes are stamped on the gearbox.
They are located on the top just above the shifter linkage.
                This is a HWY Box.
