Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Servicing Help Needed

    G'Day Guys,
I've had my 08 GTI for almost 2 years now of basically trouble free driving.
I would consider myself pretty handy with a spanner and have been servicing my own cars for 10+ years now.
But I'm looking to have a major service down on my GTI and have the timing belt, water pump and thermostat changed out.
This is a bit beyond my skill set, so rather than paying a mechanic to do the work....
Would anyone in the Sydney metro, Central Coast or Newcastle area be interested in earning a bit of cash and doing the work?
I'd rather pay someone with the skills the cash, rather than a mechanic I've never personally dealt with before.
Happy to pay someone for their time etc as I'm mainly interested in providing moral support and hopefully picking up a few new skills along the way.
If anyone is interested feel free to send me a PM and we can go from there.
Otherwise, would anyone have any recommendations on a mechanic?

If you reckon you're handy with a spanner, then I reckon you're ready to move on to the next step - the job you're talking about might seem daunting, but it's not complicated and is reasonably hard to stuff up

There are a few step-by-step guides that people have written, do some digging

      Simon k,
I got mine done by Jimmy Mc.

After Jimmy did mine he mentioned a key step that the DIY step by step miss. Allow the engine to cool completely being one.

It is these little subtle things that the Techs learn and put into practice.

Great if you are able to DYI. But one mistake is too many with timing belt etc.

      Cheers Al
