  • Oil change 15,000 necessary?

I have a my16 polo gti 1.8lt and obviously vw insist on waiting until 1 year or 15,000 to change the oil. Is this really good for the engine?

The car comes with castrol edge long life iii 5w_30 standard.

I would like to change after 7500 Atleast.

VW obviously think it is. However its your money to do as you like. In Europe there is no 12 month limit, but Aus has been defined as needing it.

I don't think that changing oil early will do anything bad at all - I think 15k intervals are too long even once the engine has run in, more so when it's brand new and higher amounts of metal shavings will be present in the oil.
Change it early is my advice - if that's what you want to do. It won't harm anything.

I've always changed the first oil between 1000km and 2,500km and never had any issues with oil usage or oil leaks. IMO, the first oil change is important for the engine longevity as well as always changing oil on time. In all our family cars, it's 2x per year, before Summer and before winter.

The transmissions and diffs are running in as well and need an early oil change. I've always changed the factory fill between 10,000km and 20,000km. My T5's manual gearbox is getting an oil change every 2 years, where the auto transmissions every 45,000km.

There is a list of severe service conditions in the owners manual. If you meet any of them then you should change it earlier.

FWIW, I did UOA at the 60,000km service and the 15k old oil tested beautifully.

I have a 2007 1.8tsi Gen1 with 170,000km and it's running beautifully. Up too 60k it was serviced every 15k. beyond that it's been done every 7500km (because I DIY and had lots of oil available).

If you only intend keeping the car up to 100,000km then I'd just do every 15k. If you intend to be a long term owner then I'd consider every 7500-10k km.

Yeah when we used to get services done to the TDI at the dealer/mech we did 15k intervals just because it costs less to service less often (obviously). Now that I do it myself, I change oil at 10k intervals because 1. I can get parts and oil relatively cheaply, and 2. It's driven under severe conditions (dirt roads, harsh driving etc.) and I feel better with shorter intervals.
The Polo's at 130,500km now and still feels very good, so I must be doing something right.

Does changing the oil and filter void the factory warranty? Even if I use factory parts?

From what I've gathered, doing that won't directly void the warranty, but VW can certainly deny engine warranty claims based on DIY servicing.
Knowing how much can go wrong with VWs I'd try my hardest to keep the warranty in tact.

exactly... factory parts, your hands... factory parts, their hands... so long as done properly its the same thing when looking at it later without knowing the story.

All work on the car must be carried out by a licensed mechanic to keep the car covered under warranty AFAIK, even simple tasks, thats an ACCC rule I believe and stops the dealers forcing you to use them instead of the other shops. Any work by a non VW dealer is not warranted for poor workmanship (thats down to the mechanic you used, not VW) ...and non standard or non genuine parts can void (some or all of) the warranty (this is a huge subject in itself as some things are fine, some are not [1]) but a licensed mechanic has to be used either way.

1 - Eg. VW have been fine on warranty with my car, even with a mid muffler delete they funded a new engine and a bunch of other things. But all the work was performed by the selling dealer who Ive dealt with since the car was new, its never been anywhere else or had any DIY servicing.

Only if you're doing oil changes between the dealer/mechanic services. If you do them as a replacement of the dealer/mech services then they'll know as there would be no stamp in the log book.

                              no worries

Its a thorny subject designed to make you think that its too hard and that you should just go to your dealer.

Even when trading your car they tell you that if you had not had it serviced by a dealer that it would be worth less. I know this as I had 3 places advise me about this on trade in recently, yet they didnt bother to look at the book even tho I had actually been to the supplying dealer every time in fact, so they just took my word for it. But, how much actual extra worth they implied by that was never said, I mean if I saved $1k in servicing by shopping outside the dealer network, would my car have been worth 1k less? if so, well, I break even LOL [1]

Anyway, what they were saying is, I believe, just part of the selling process. Its designed to make you believe the story for when youve bought your new car, ie that you should preserve the value of it by servicing with the main dealer etc. New car selling is such a process, fine when you can see thru it tho.

1 - FYI They also suggested that my car was worth less as it didnt have leather, Nav, 5 doors, Xenons and the sunroof. Those extras would have been $5k+ when new so I would have expected it would be worth a little bit more to trade, since it cost more... but I wouldnt have seen anywhere close to the cost of them back in resale of course, yet the suggestion was that the extras add value. I would have to agree that is loosely 'True', but only 'kinda' as spec'ing a car up is not a way to add value later, only trim levels and model codes do that (and only to an extent of course). Dealers, gotta love em!
