Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Seems alot of money for not much gain. Think Id prefer to go with an APR tune

Why is that so expensive! I'd rather visit HPf and ask for a dyno tune at around $1200.

I had the ABT module installed on my previous 1.4 Polo CTHE engine GTI. It's boxed up in my garage now.

Yes I can vouch for its effectiveness, I miss it. It made the car feel VERY punchy and responsive around town ie heaps more useable power rather than only just more power at higher revs like some tunes seem to give. If APR are going to take 18 months to develop a tune for the new 1.8, as was the wait for the CTHE engine tune, then I will probably get it updated soon (been quoted around $1500 3-4 months ago when the 1.8 tune was released) to suit my new Polo.

Best part about the ABT tune is I could unplug and remove it easily myself if I was taking the car to the dealer. PM me if you want more info.

I don't think it's quite that simple. One reputable company here with extensive tuning experience (APR agent) has tried and failed to tune the new 1.8.

Yeah I was checking out its stats and it appears this engine may have been pushed fairly hard already. The output, in my opinion is significant already

I read that the 1.8 is a thinner walled version of the 2.0 litre EA888 used in the Golf and Audi (Audi designed motor). So if the engine is pushed pretty hard already in terms of output, is it due to the smaller capacity or thinner walled design, because in the 2.00 L the Golf gets 162Kw and R gets 206Kw both of which gets a bigger turbo as well. Or other factors e.g internal bits are not as strong to cope with more power.
Also does the tune updates usually increase turbo boost to generate more power or is it due to more efficient engine management, which would influence reliabilty over time.

I'm not sure what "thinner walled" means.
The cylinder spacing in the 2 litre and the 1.8 litre are both 88 mm.
The bore diameter in 1.8 litre and the 2 litre is 82.5 mm.
The difference is capacity comes from the stroke, the 1.8 litre is 84.1 mm and the 2 litre is 92.8 mm.
Both blocks are quoted as weighing 33 kgs.

APR Australia has a tune for the gen3 1.8 TSI in the A3 already, 187kw and 404NM, I'm expecting similar figures for the GTI when released. Contact Guy at APR Australia directly to get the latest on where this at.

And Gary is correct, same block essentially for the 1.8 and the 2.0. 1.8 is a short stroke version which potentially could love revs just a tiny bit more than the 2.0

                        Hi Sydneykid,

This is where I read the information about "thinner walls"

Volkswagen 2015 Polo GTI - First drive: VW’s updated Polo GTI is six steps forward | GoAuto

"...The 1798cc four-cylinder – still known internally as a EA888, according to Volkswagen engine expert Ralph Schirmer – sports a new steel block that has been put on a diet, with 3.0mm walls that are half a millimetre thinner than those on the 1998cc version. "

Now that you mention it I read that review and remember the quote, but it's strange that both blocks are quoted as weighing 33 kgs. If the walls are 0.5 mm thinner it wouldn't concern me much as the shorter stroke in the 1.8L will put less side load on the block than 2.0L.

APR Already has the IP from the car (Both manual & 7speed DSG) - they have some calibration trips booked to both Australia & the UK in the near future to finalise the software.

It will not be a plug in box, it will be a properly calibrated ECU flash that will control fuel, timing and torque, not just intercept & multiply a boost signal like a tuning box.

I think 187kW might be worth the wait. Local APR agent said to me that "it's going to be insane".
