  • Milltek owners - your experience at highway speeds?

    Hi all,

New member and Audi A1 Sport owner, but posting here because, well, same car, different badge and all.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a full turbo back Milltek system but I'm hung up on the resonated vs non-resonated system issue.

I'm happy for a little more noise under throttle, but I'm worried about cabin noise at cruising speeds between say 80-120kph.

It's my daily drive to work (105kph most of the way) and I'll be putting about 4000 highway km's on it over the Xmas period driving from Canberra to Tassie and back + sightseeing while we're there. GF will be in the car and will be unimpressed if we can't have a conversation or she can't take a nap in the passenger seat on an 8 hour stint to Melbourne.

HP HQ in Brisbane have the downpipe and a non-resonated cat back in stock, or I can order a resonated cat back in from the UK, with ETA 6 weeks.

I've YouTubed every video of Milltek on A1's and Polo GTI's I can find, and everyone is accelerating and fooling around, and they sound great. I just want to know how it is cruising with steady throttle in the 80-120kph range. I don't want drone.

Anyone with a full Milltek non-res on their daily drive and highway cruise experience want to put in a good word for it?

Did anyone buy a non-res system and later regret it or take steps to quieten it down again?

    Thanks

EDIT: I've just read these 2 posts which makes me think more and more that the resi system and the 6 week wait might be safest http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ml#post1146830

I got a fella a Res system for a MK5 R32. Quiet as stock at idle and not much in the way of extra on the road. I'd go Res over not everytime. You don't need noise to make power.

The resonated version on this application makes very little noise over stock, so most people buy the non resonated (hence why they are in stock). I have been in a Polo GTI with a full Milltek non res - there was certainly no drone in that so I would imagine your A1 would be similarly drone free.

Yep that was my system I advertised, ended up getting it re-jigged to fit my 6C.

I think you will find that the Milltek cat back resonated you said you can order from the UK utilises the VW resonator and to my knowledge there is NO Milltek 'resonator' for the 6R. This cat back system with VW resonator will be too quiet for you I expect.

You could order the cat back system and do what I did, get it adapted by an exhaust fitter without the VW resonator - I did this initially but it was too over the top for me and after a quick run around the block I went straight back to fitter and had a small stainless 3" resonator adapted in.

With the A1, there may be a difference in the exhaust system and an all Milltek resonated system could be available.

        Cheers

Thanks for the reply Guy_H. Obviously your thoughts carry a bit of weight because you spend so much time around them, and you were super helpful when we chatted on the phone a month or so back about my ECU and DSG remaps.

Though I'm still thinking I'll have to err on the side of caution; a couple of those posts I linked in my OP have sufficiently spooked me.

If I get it and, as people have said, find it quiet, then, in a sense, there's no harm done. I'm primarily getting it for the performance aspect and aside from the volume, at least the tone should be nicer.

But if I get non-res and it's too loud for my lifestyle, then I'd need to find the time and money to get it back on the hoist and another modification.

car_nut: I've seen your Polo amongst the YouTube videos

I can't comment on your 'no resonator for the 6R' thing. I'm just working off the options list I got sent by Byron @ HP HQ.
The part number I've got for the cat back is SSXAU519
It specifically lists centre pipe with silencer + the rear section + tip assembly

The SSXAU519 kit is $150 more than the non-resonated SSXAU459 too - which just lists centre pipe + rear section + tips - so I'd hope the res kit comes with more metal, not less. lol.
