  • Odd whine noise from front of the car - 2015 Polo GTI

    Hi All!

Hoping someone can help me with this problem. I have a 2015 Polo GTI Manual

So one week from getting my brand new car I was in heavy traffic (bumper to bumper going less than 10kph start stop) and when I put my car into 1st gear and start to move slowly I get this whine noise from the front of my car, I am 95% certain its coming from the wheel as it almost sounds like the noise goes with the turning of the wheels.

I have attached a short audio clip of the noise, contains a few clips over various times that I was able to get a recording. The noise can be very loud at times, loud enough for someone on the the end of a phone call was able to hear it.

It happens when going less than 15kph and either in 1st gear or neutral when moving slowly.

I told my VW dealership however they could not replicate the noise and brushed it off, I didnt have the recording at the time however.

Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.

Let me know if the audio doesn't work.

    Thanks for any help!

Sounds like brakes to me or, some part that is rotating, brushing against the body/calipers etc.

Above 15kmh, is it audible or does the engine/road noise drown it out?

Ive got the same sound. Someone mentioned that it could be the hill start assist but i havent confirmed.

Hill assist is completely silent in both my Mk 6 Golf and Mazda SP25. Doesnt sound right that hill assist would make noise - especially not if its the front wheels making the noise.

Above 15kmh it seems to go away, I don't think its being drowned out just seems to not happen over that speed. Happened a few times this morning on the drive to work. Fairly intermittent though which is annoying.

It's definitely coming from the front as well.

I am thinking of going back to VW now with the recording and see what they say now, they can't say this sound is just normal.

Hey, if you guys have that sound then you could probably take it back to get it fixed.

I pretty much had the exact situation that bodyboard described above and in his audio recording. Sound only happened at slow speeds and in stop start traffic.

I showed the service guy my audio recording but he still made me drive him around. On flat roads I couldn't replicate the noise even though it would happen normally. However, I DID manage to replicate the noise by pulling up kerbside on a sloped road facing downhill. Applied brakes until auto stop switched off the engine. When I released brakes and the car started rolling forward the sound was obvious.

They told me it was brake dust or something like that and that they had to dechamfer the brake discs/pads. Sorry for the really vague diagnosis though - i'm just a car noob D:

But yea don't let them brush you off if you have that noise.

              Good luck!
