Get a list of recalls from your local VW service centre and check the potential car to ensure it has had those work done.
Check all log book service entries
I would also check tyre wear and interior condition to get an indication of how the car has been used.
Yeah, so I love my GTI (2011) but it has had all the usual issues. Check the exhaust tips for a clue about oil consumption. Mine uses ~2L/1000km. It's not the end of the world, just something worth noting. Mine had the mechatronics unit replaced at 20,000km and still burned the clutches up by 28,000km. It's now at 52,000 (only 10 months later) and they're already starting to slur the gearchanges again. VW almost always honours goodwill warranties for clutches though.
TL;DR: make sure it's had the recall work done, make sure it idles smooth (shaky idle could be coil packs), make sure it drives and stops well
