Oil or Hydraulic leaks

I contacted a volkswagen dealer on the mornington peninsula today regarding a price on some longlife III oil in 5 litres. All i got off the guy in parts was "if you can't give me a Vin i don't know what oil your talking about"! , typical ex retail cashier with no idea. In the end i went to repco and purchased a 5 litre bottle of Castrol edge 5w 30 504.00/507.00 for $75.
The plan was to change the oil saturday or sunday before our drive to sydney from melb at the end of next week, the polo has 20,000km on it and i thought a mid cycle change, the middle of the norm 15,000km changes should help.

Tonight i had a quick look underneath the GTI and was surprised to see a **** load of what looks like oil spread on the underside of the plastic under tray. Anyone seen this before? I have only ever seen under the car once before and that was when the res delete was done, after that it went for a 15,000km service, I did complain about the excess power steering fluid spilled on the passenger side near the green cap below the passenger headlight, not sure if they tried topping it up and spilled more fluid at the last service.

I have a 99 Jeep that is more than capable of leaking all sorts of fluids on a daily basis , i really don't need this out of a 2013 volkswagen. Should i clean the oil off or wait to present it to the dealer at the next service????

In all seriousness though just clean it and check to see if it comes back- chances are there is nothing wrong.

iIf your dealer is anything like my old dealer then they probably can't be stuffed doing the job properly and just spill fluids everywhere. When I got my car back from my 30K service I had brake and engine coolent all over my bottom tray and engine oil dripping down the side of the engine block!

Also I would just double check that the oil you got from repco meets the 507 standard. Last time I looked you could only get the Castrol longlife III 507 from the dealers as they wouldn't licence it out and you could only get the 502/505 from other 3rd party's - unless things have changed recently

You can't check it if it meets the VW507 standard. You can only check if the label says "VW approved for 504.00/507.00".

Labels using the term "meets, exceeds, can be used where"... are a sure sign that such oil has no manufacturer's approval at all.

Even if it's 502/505 it still meets the minimum VW requirement for a 15k service unless his Polo is diesel with DPF. As an interim for 10k km I don't see the issue.

I have noticed the same dumb attitude from VW parts people.The guy wouldnt even listen till I gave him a VIN
(just the model should be sufficient for 99.99% of parts)
Next thing they'll want your VIN to get the correct petrol !!
Anyway, my hatch lock broke, quoted me $150+. Got one sent from England (genuine VW part) for less than half that including freight. And the guy didn't need my VIN.
So check what they quote you for user replaceable parts

Sorry for the late reply, the oil is 504/507 Castrol 5w 30 fst which says on it approved for Audi bmw longlife-04 mob approved 229.51 vw504/507 Porsche Skoda vw vehicles with turbo/superchargers or diesel turbos with dpf filters. It's 5litre but in a shorter bottle than other edge products by castrol.
Took it back on sat morning and refunded it and then bought it again @25% off which turned out to be $58 , btw the leak was spilled power steering fluid all cleaned up now. Oil changed and ready for a interstate trip this weekend , I'm interested to see what I can get out of a tank of fuel on the highway @ 110kmh

724km was as far as i was willing to push a 45 litre tank in the GTI. However it meant only a tank and a quarter from the mornington peninsula to hornsby in sydney, great going at 5.7 litres per 100km. Around town when I'm into it I'm lucky to get 11 litres per 100km. As an owner of a GTI for only 6 months or so it seems like a very versatile car for city or highway driving , my only complaint is the semi rock hard suspension over some of the bumps on the M31/Hume Highway. Other than that i can't complain , zero oil usage for 2150km since the change to the out of cycle castrol 5w30 edge FST 504/507 oil change.

Agreed about the suspension, I think it's good for general driving but the car can be a bit harsh over long distances, makes you tired faster.
