Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VW updated the Polo GTI around this time last year, they added the adaptive dampers (sports mode), reverse camera and Apple Carplay/Android Auto as standard.

I've also noticed some cars on Carsales advertised as MY16's not having these inclusions, just make sure that it has them when you inquire about the car. The previous models without these additions seem to sell for quite a few grand less, compared to the updated MY16 models.

      • Just wondering what running oil temps people have with their 1.8s. I've been getting around 105-107 degrees and i saw 109 the other day when it was 33degrees outside, was worried that was kinda high.

Also does anyone know what oil weights they use at the dealership? Is it 5W-30 or 0W-40?

Generally 5w-30 that meets VW504.00 oil spec.

That temp is within the normal range.

In the maintence manual for the car it says 4 cylinder TSI with fixed servicing is 502 oil and theres a table that says QI4 15,000km/1 year (fixed)

yes, you are correct. That's what it says in the manual & you can use 502.00 in a petrol engine on fixed services if you wish.

                The OPs question was:

And generally the dealerships will use 504.00 because the diesels with DPF can only use 504.00 and the mechanic doesn't have to think if the only have 504.00 on the shelf.

Thanks, sorry i wasn't trying to argue with you, just was a little confused, thought maybe i was reading it wrong

Makes sense with the 504 and the compatability, which is also good because it opens up more options with oil choice

                  • I found this about the 502 vs 504 and the guys there say 504 is better than 502

Yes, that's correct. It is better.

the problem is that 99% of 504.00 spec is is 5w-30 and some people want to use Xw-40 for track days or if they have an oil guzzler. 502.00 is available in a range of viscosities.

I use 502.00 because it's $29.00 on special at SCA and since getting a job in the CBD I only do 5,000km a year, so the oil change mileage is very low.
