Tyres 215/40/17 weird size?

Hi all

just wanting to see what everyone else does for tyres? im trying to find 2x tyres that isnt ridiculously expensive (150-180 mark) but im actually having trouble anyone actually having tyres in stock... What tyres are you running? im thinking of going to a 225/45/17 as they are a more common tyre but that would mean changing all 4 when the backs are virtually still 60-70%.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure 215 width is the biggest you can fit to a 7" width rim - hope I'm wrong because I would love to fit 225 onto them.

The recomended size for these rims is actually 205mm - which offers a lot more choice of tyres but you are loosing 1cm of tread...

For me I rather keep the tread and pay abit extra to get some bridgestones re002 or s001 (240-280$ range). Conti's, and Pirelli also make the size but besides that yeah not much.

You can get RE050's in the Polo GTIs size for $222 from KMart Tyre and auto

Yes it's an unpopular size. Tempe Tyres have a few choices starting around $100.

225/45r17 would be way to big in diameter. You're going 31mm bigger - more if you take into account the difference between a worn & unworn tyre.

Just because you are changing the size doesn't mean you have to do all 4. You can do them in pairs.

205/45R17's are 2% bigger than the 215/40R17's you're currently running so would put your speedo out by a little (although it already reads over by 6% so would still be under the limit) and would give you some more options although you are then trading off tread on the road.

That said decent tyres are worth the extra $$, especially with a GTI you can have some fun in

I've got 17x7.5 rpf1's on my car so I should be sweet to run the 225. Instead of just doing the 2 tyres I've decided YOLO and just to do all 4 I think ku36's or s001 it is.. Hopefully the 225/45 fill abit of the arch gap aswell I know it's not much but it all counts.

If you are not lowered you will be fine, but seriously, you don't need to go the 45 series tyre.

Car is lowered on h&r's 25/40 but apparently 225/40 are also a pain to find somewhere in stock.. Ozzy tyres/ Tempe tyre and st george tyres are lucky to have a set in stock and they are no brand. I feel like the only option let is to go to the more common 45 series tyre

Just remember that those tyres are ~5% larger than the originals and will push your speedo and odometer out by that same margin.

They may fit and work just fine and given the ~6% error in the speedo anyway it should still be legally acceptable, just be aware of the changes.

I previously had 18x7.5 with 225/35R18. The overall diameter was 614mm and I had only slight rubbing with this combination with the same lowering springs as yourself.

The Kumho KU36 225/45R17 is 634mm in overall diameter. That is 30mm more in diameter than the stock 215/40R17 tyres and you WILL get major rubbing...but then again, maybe this doesn't bother you.

A standard 215/40R17 tyre is 604mm in overall diameter
A standard 205/45R17 tyre is 614mm in overall diameter (same as the above 18inch spec)

As an alternative to 225/45 R17 (634 mm, +5.0%) tyres, consider mounting 215/45 R17 (626 mm, +3.6%) tyres instead. It's still a relatively large increase, just not as extreme.

Naturally, fitting a 225/45 R17 tyre will increase the ride height by 12 mm, and for a 215/45 R17 tyre, by 8 mm (using 215/40 R17 as a baseline).

As gldgti was alluding to, 215/45 R17 is a somewhat common fitment in Australia, so prices should be similar to that of 225/45 R17 tyres.
