My GTI usually averages mid-high 5's on the highway and in city driving, around 8L/100km. However it should be stipulated that I tend to have a lead foot.

After 20,000 from first fill until now I am averaging 6.3 which is 2/3 highway and 1/3 urban and heavy traffic. The last 5 tanks have been between 5.9-6.3. The best ever tank was a 4.8! People tend to focus over style of driving, type of road and traffic etc. But, the trips I typically do the slope has a significant factor. Morning to work (downhill approx average 4.7), evening from work (uphill, approx average 6.- same driving style and traffic density.

My 3rd long term average is now 5.0L/100km, helped by some long distance driving. Just got back from a trip from Toowoomba to Blue Mts via the New England H'way, some back roads though Wiseman's Ferry & up the Bells Line of Road. That average was 4.6L/100km. The return via Sydney, Pt Macquarie, Oxley H'way to Armidale and return on the New England H'way again gave 4.5L/100km. I did 992.3km on a tank with a range of 80km. My less than 7 month old Golf is about to have its 30,000km service. Leaving Blackheath after a cold start the average was showing 2.8L/100km when I got onto the M4 into Sydney after 55km. That's what a downhill run can do.Nov '15 Polo 81TSI manual white

A very inaccurate way of measuring consumption.
The only sure way is to fill up at a pump that you use frequently. Fill it till you can see the level take the odo reading Drive it and the fill at the same pump to the same level and read the odo.
That will give you the true consumption.
All these ones who say "I get from A to B on about half a tank so must be getting about 4L per 100Km" are dreaming if they think that's accurate.
I did a trip from Brissy to Coffs and return Carefully filled and recorded figures and got 5.1L per100k , traveling at the speed limit wherever possible. Figures on dash differed. I had to top up in Coffs but did it to the same level it was filled to first.Last edited by Guest001; 17-01-2014, 08:01 AM.2021 Kamiq LE 110 , Moon White, BV cameras F & B

I fill up at the same pump each time I refuel, I also use Road Trip Lite app on my iPhone. This is returning figures of 5.1-5.7 per tank. This records the amount of litres I put in, amount of Km's I do til i refuel next, and then spits back the consumption figures.
I completely understand that the fuel gauge is non-linear.I SellNissansSkodas.

In my Landcruiser I could and did fill it right up to the top of the neck each time so I knew I had the same level each time.
Then do it.. Its not good relying on the auto shutoff on a pump as they are as inaccurate as the dash figures.
Same with the Polo I filled it till I could see the level and then refilled it the same.
There is another thread on this which has unreachable figures on it and people saying I got 890 k out of a tank.
So how big is a "tank"
EG I could get to Coffs and back on a "Tank" in both the Polo and the Cruiser so working on that theory I must have got just as good figures out of both cars.
Not likely. The Polo holds 44 litres and did 5.1/100 The Cruiser holds 145 litres and did 10.4/1002021 Kamiq LE 110 , Moon White, BV cameras F & B

The difference is that #1 is the current journey and #2 is a long term average. Read the owners manual for the exact numbers but #2 resets itself automatically after maybe 9999KM. #1 after the car has been off for a couple of hours.
This has been a feature of GTIs since the MK1 1800 came out in about 1983. Grinds that my 2000 S3 only has a long term and instantaneous output on the computer......
