Should I buy a Polo GTI

If I was in that market I'd buy a Fiesta ST. DON'T buy a Polo GTI. Seriously, they are far too unreliable. We have one, it's a pile of junk and we hate it. There is always something wrong with it.

The gearbox is rubbish (you'll need new clutches from the 30K mark onwards), the engines burn oil (173 pages can't be wrong) and the engines like to be replaced.

The ride is firm and the cabin average but it gets rave reviews - generally rated the best small hot hatch and a hoot to drive - and very inexpensive (note Transporter, not cheap)
Where do I bag Focus? I said, there's a reason why cheap cars are cheap, you just made your conclusions. I don't care what the top selling car in the world is, it means nothing to me in the time when I make a decision what car should I buy.

I agree with the Fiesta ST being the real choice, it is the latest model which will help it retain value in the future.

It really is the current hero car in the magazines that the Polo and Clio were a few years ago.
If you have the 30k budget go for the newer Fiesta, I love and hate my Gti, but it is just too highly tuned technology wise that it has niggling issues and doubt. I would think the simpler fiesta will be stronger. That is if you are spending that money.

Otherwise if you want to save some bucks and do want a cool car though it has the same risk as the Polo, find a Fabia vrs.

I would aim for just under 30k for a my13 gti, getting a deal for that with a high end trade in price would be a good result. That's 10% off list, in the new year you could push a bit harder as it is clearly old stock they will need to reduce eventually anyway.

I'm pretty sure the newer CTHE engines have sorted most of the problems out haven't they?

People are still having problems, but not as many I think.

More than likely the VW will not be getting a facelift but in fact will be joining the MQB platform with a new chassis design to suit a new gearbox / engine / power unit.
Yes I know that the Polo was the first with the current design language, but a Polo 6R facelift has been confirmed and it is happening. Plus I did say it was the front, so it'll just have the newer style xenons, updated infotainment/steering wheel and that's about it. Much like when the 'rocco went to mk6 tech.

Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) managing director John White has confirmed he is implementing a "new strategy" for the brand that aims at achieving a consistent sales performance though "trying to be more competitive head-to-head with mainstream competitors".

To be fair I really like the Polo and its more grown up style.

Still if anyone can tell me what they think is a fair price for a new old stock MY13 polo GTI I would be greatly appreciated.
I suggest you stay well away because I am yet to actually meet someone (including members on here that in one breath say they're happy then the next week complain about something) that either is 100% happy with or has not had a single problem in their GTI and based on the ratios (they really haven't sold all that many gti's) of problems vs vehicles sold, my advice is to stay away. If you absolutely have to have one then I really, REALLY hope you have a trouble free run with it which I highly doubt you will but hey, they might fluke it and build one right for a change

If for $32,000 you want a genuine performance car then look at a couple year old WRX. Granted it's not as nice inside or as fuel efficient but you won't have make friends with your service manager and visit them monthly, worry about being stranded by a dead gearbox control unit and it will be massively quicker than all but the rarest of polo gti's that are at stage 2 tunes.

                But hey, it's your choice

As I've said before, time again would I have bought my polo GTI over the manual golf GTI with no options sitting on the showroom floor? No way in hell.

My CTHE used 2L of oil I the first 3,000kms before I flicked it on, mainly because of concerns about unresolved oil usage issues.

Inexpensive cars are not necessarily poor and expensive cars are not necessarily good.

Good and poor cars can be found within marques of all sizes and across the entire price spectrum.

Generally speaking, Ford of Europe and VW design and make solid and fine cars, if not as ultimately reliable as some other (mostly Japanese) marques.

The Polo GTI is, honestly, a fine automobile - but there is nothing fundamentally superior that makes its faults (some of which are fairly serious in nature) excusable. You could maybe forgive it if it were the ultimate expression of the performance hot hatch genre - but it isn't.

It also might've been bearable for owners if VW had great aftersales support, but that has yet to be consistently proven.

If you're still keen, I say bargain hard. Accept nothing more than $30k driveaway. Make VW (and the dealers by association) work hard for your money.

I got my bare bones GTI for $29k driveaway with a trade-in. With all the negative press they should be willing to bargain and if they aren't then walk away :p

Left field but if you don't mind some risk how about a clearance Opel Astra GTC? Full Holden warranty and servicing though probably an orphan long term. I'd still go the Fiesta ST but if you really can't cop it...

Have you driven the Fiesta BTW? I'm no fan of Ford's current interior treatments either but when I drove both the ordinary Fiesta and Focus it was obvious that Ford of Europe knows how to build cars for drivers. You don't notice the styling when the drive is good.
