  • Should I buy a Polo GTI

    Hi Guys,

Am looking to trade in my old Mazda SP23 for a new Polo GTI.
The dealer has a "new" MY13 car for $32,250.
This sounds a little pricey to me cos if I'm not mistaken MY13 cars are built in 2012 so in 2 weeks it essentially 2 years old!

What do you think a fair price is?

The MY14 cars at the same dealer are $33,747

    Cheers

    Ricko

You'd want to pay way less than that, and get a fair trade in.

Look across carsales and use those as bargaining tool.

Are you saying $29 is possible for a MY14 Car?

For 4-5k more you could get a Ford Focus ST 2013 build with trimmings which has a 184kw engine to boot, leather recaro' standard, sat nav standard, reverse sensors / camera standard, heated seats standard, keyless entry, push start, manual box which is a lot of fun!.

Should you buy a Polo GTi?, in short:

There are the reasons why cheap cars are cheap and a lot of goodies fitted to them as STD.

There are many happy Polo GTI owners.

Where is your evidence that the Focus ST is a cheap car? (and not in reference to the price I know you're referring to the build quality). Remember VW has a stranglehold on the market in terms of the Golf GTI...so Ford has to price aggressively and fit option items as standard to woo buyers to their marquee.

I hated Ford as a brand, but as of two months ago after seeing their quality assurance testing, service center staff and compared it to VW that all changed...the Focus ST is a bang for your buck hot hatch.

This is coming from someone who owns several VAG/Audi/Porsche group vehicles, it took a lot for me to swallow the bitter pill that Ford has built a "solid" vehicle.

Edit: oh yes and the Focus ST is designed and built in Germany, where as the Polo GTi is built in Pamploma Spain (known as Monday built cars district).

Only time will tell my friend how good this Focus is. It's not good enough when the brand has just one model that is good or made to appeal.
Remember that there are 2.5 million current Polos made and more than 12 milions all Polos sold world wide. The opinion of a few that find themselves in the forum and think that the Polo is not good because theirs have a problem, just means not much to me.

I've talked to one of my customer(the age around 50) who owns 2 Golf5 and 1 Polo 2006, his daughter just bought a new Octavia. I asked him what he thought about the recent VW media attention? He replied, even if there were 1 million people whinging about the quality, it changes nothing on that for him the VW is the best car he had owned till today. You know, what the medias are? The attention seekers just wanting a story, he said.

Yes, the media and the journalists are forming the peoples opinion with their stories/articles that they bring. The forums are doing the similar job. In my case and many others, they're losing me.

                  Hi Hail22

To be honest I would love to buy an ST but unfortunately 4 or 5 grand is a lot of money to me and they are just out of my reach at the moment.
The Polo sits about at the top of my price range so is more in line with the Focus S which is nothing special.

Happy to here any other suggestions under $30k

Find the dealer who is willing to make a deal and make them an offer, don't negotiate.

I know its not most peoples cup of tea, but I'd say hold out for the facelifted Polo. Its hard to say how much new kit/engines it'll have since the brand new Polo is only 2-3years away but the rumours suggest a front more like the Golf 7 (ie the 'u' headlights if you go xenon, maybe the radar emergency braking) and Golf 7 derived interior (new GTI wheel, infotainment etc.) plus the GTI may get the 1.8t. Mind you it'll probably be 6 months before it's actually here on our shores and it won't be revealed until Geneva in march I think.

I also call poppycock on this, the 6R was the first of the facelift to the VW brand which is now shared between the Jetta, Golf 7.

The tiguan rear lights design is derived from the VW polo rear lights (brake lights), even the TSI / TDI Golf 7 rear brake light configuration

More than likely the VW will not be getting a facelift but in fact will be joining the MQB platform with a new chassis design to suit a new gearbox / engine / power unit.

Ah Transporter you're hilarious. You complain about people bagging VAG cars but you don't mind bagging the top selling car in the world at the moment. Presumably everyone who bought a Focus did so because they are crap. To the OP, how about a Fiesta ST? The ride is firm and the cabin average but it gets rave reviews - generally rated the best small hot hatch and a hoot to drive - and very inexpensive (note Transporter, not cheap)

A good suggestion but I just cant get passed the horrible interior and not to keen on the outside either.
To be fair I really like the Polo and its more grown up style.

Still if anyone can tell me what they think is a fair price for a new old stock MY13 polo GTI I would be greatly appreciated.
