What's the difference with inox vs no inox? I googled and it brought up salt spraying and corrosion testing?

Without going into detail the inox uses a stainless housing where as the basic has a galvanized housing.

        Thanks lunchbox.

Anyone tried the Weitec's? I'm reading here that the TX are equiv to the KW V2's at a cheaper price point (owned by same company).

        Any thoughts on those?

Over here the Weitecs have gotten the reputation of being one of the softest coils for the 6R, and some people selling them due to scraping front bumper too easily. I'm running AP coils and they are the budget KW-V1. The lowering is the same as the V1, and I am very happy with them. Compared to other cheap coils like V-maxx they are very comfortable and expected them to be worse, until I ran 18". Rebound could be better, but springs arent that hard. Can't have anyone sitting in the back because the fender will rub on the stretched tire though, but that is almost never nessessary.

Interesting. I'm looking into something to allow me to lower the car without sacrificing the ride, so you're saying the Weitecs when lowered will scrape easily because they're not as stiff/harsh?

yes, both cars I know that had the Weitecs scraped a lot. Keep in mind both cars were 1.2 TDI Bluemotions, so they have added lips under the front bumper. A GTI front bumper is also lower than a normal one so the they should effectively have the same ground clearance.

I can't guarantee you won't sacrifice some comfort, but there are far worse alternatives. As I see it lower simply means less room for suspension travel, meaning harder ride to prevent bottoming out.

The overall arm travel is critical in suspension and handling. Putting a shorter and stiffer spring in place and then lowering the coils will in effect unload the spring at full travel. Use too stiff a spring for the roads unloaded and the car will bounce on the springs. Shorten the overall length (screw the bottom mounts) shortens your struts, this then means your arms hang on the strut at full travel when unloading the suspension over crests or after a bump.

Ideally a car needs droop adjustments on the bottom arm to change the length of travel for the stiffness and length of spring. If the suspension system is configured for short travel at the factory, it should be easier to get a strut system that is the correct length and allows the car to sag to a desired height. If like a Mk2 there is a lot of arm travel, then either a 2 stage coilover or variable rate springs are needed.

Our Mk2 has theKoni STR-T and its 30mm lower but maintains the same strut and spring length. This means the spring is relatively soft, gives a good ride for Brisbane conditions and becuase "young fella" want wide offset on rims, we bottom out and rub at 3 o'clock looking at RR. So we're going to look into tuning the bump stops.

Good luck, hope you find what you need, personaly I'd spend the little extra and get Koni Coilovers, $1600 or so for a set. They have a variable rate spring that allows for the initial sag and then stiffen up at the desired ride height.

Hey pontiff was hoping you could elaborate on this a little, I'm currently running Eibach Pro-street-s coilovers on my 77 and I believe I'm experiencing the same problem, although this has been going on since day 1 of installing them apologies if this is in the wrong section just very new to forum use!

I've owned Weitecs for 10 months now. The ride is stiff but that was what I was looking for. I'm maxed on rear and kept the same setting from the box for the fronts.

I drive enthusiastically and I've only scrubbed once and that was with a full load. I only scrap on steep driveways and that is if I go in like a muppet and not an angle.

With a full load do you have to drive carefully? Someone earlier said the Weitecs were a bit soft.

Also as they're not stainless steel do you take particular care of them? Scrub them with a brush? Or spray wd40 or grease them up etc to reduce corrosion and rust?

Can anyone comment on caring for non stainless steel coilovers?

They still have corrosion resistance properties. They won't rust up on you. Plus they are German and Germany has a lot of salt on their roads in winter.

Stainless steel is just a form of anti rusting. Unless you are constantly rubbing acid or salt on it then rust won't be an issue for many years.

Thanks man! I ordered some Weitec GT's also and I kept reading about guys in Europe taking their coils off in winter and rubbing grease on them it got me worried!

I'm on street comforts at the moment after previously running H&R 25/40's with stock dampers. You can't go quite as low as the sportier coilovers but I was happy with the ride height of the 25/40's anyway. Very happy with the comfort/handling compromise, yes they're still stiff (they're coilovers after all) but the harshness over sharp bumps that was there with the H&R springs is not an issue and the control when punting hard along twisty, bumpy roads at pace is impressive (for a torsion beam rear end light car). No more skipping about on bumpy corners. Got them for 700 pounds (whatever that is these days in Aus $) from Motorsport World in the UK. Sounds like you've made your choice since you first posted but I figure someone would want to hear about the street comforts.
