  • Coil overs.... Opinions and Experiences?

    Hi Polo peoples.....

I'm asking for assistance. I would like to know what experiences people have had with coil overs in their 6R. I'm about to purchase a set to reacquaint the guards with the top of the tires...

The goal is to still retain ride quality, but get be lower.... I have narrowed it down to KW V2s or KW Street Sports. But have been tempted by the Weitecs which are $1000.00 but I don't know if the ride quality will suffer (they have to be cheap for a reason)

    Thanks

    Matt.

Coilover design and valveing is targeted at better handling so you are going to loose some ride comfort regardless. Combine that with going lower you will notice a difference in ride.
What you should really ask yourself is
      - how much comfort are you willing to give up to go lower?

the weitecs are made by KW and have Similar internals to the KW v1 but the housing is a different (Heavier material) I think from memory it's just mild steel with a galv coating instead of stainless.

i have Koni FSD'S and H&r 25/40 handling and response is better but its stiffer. Have been in polos with kw v2 and bilstein b8 they handle better hen mine but there stiffer again compared to mine.
i really only notice mine when hitting bigger bumps.

I'm very happy with my Bilstein B14s comfort-wise. Around AU$1100 shipped from awesomegti.com.

          Coil overs.... Opinions and Experiences?

So how much is typically spent on average mid level coil overs when assuming weitechs and kw v1's are more entry level?

Anyone tried the KW Street Comforts? Hardly see it mentioned here, seems to be lower and similar to a v2 but with a stock ride quality?

Im on AP X, got them pretty cheap and im very happy with handling, got the rears basically maxed out and the ride is still good.
Although they are a little more vocal than OEM setup, but thats to be expected

Any good places to recommend to find cheap coil overs?

Awesome GTI doesnt have a great range for Polo 6R.

I got lucky and got my V1 second hand for 850 from Pontiff in melb. Ride quality is not as bad as I was expecting. Rears are maxed out and front able to go lower. very happy with them.

Thankyou for the feedback, looks like I will compromise the ride either way, I'm going to go speak with guys across the road from APR here in Brisbane as they are the local stockists of both Weitec and KW....

Hey mate... glad you are happy with them. This just goes to show that one persons water is another ones wine (or whatever the saying is, i feel that I have just mucked it up but you get the idea ). Anyway... I thought the V1's were a little too firm for my liking along the roads that I use on the way to work... As Mr Death Lad says here, the rears you max our on the V1's for a nice height and the fronts you go about 1/3 the way down i think for a nice level look. I found if I went too low the angle of the driveshafts would complain and whine a bit at low speed for the first km or so but other than that, $850 that Mr Lad paid for mine was a bargain and im glad he likes them, i dropped about $500 in the space of driving them 500-750 kms or so

I have heard good words about the street comforts from KW, but I think they are about 1600 or so? I would like a set of coilovers that provided OEM SPORT ride comfort with the height of the V1's because as the OP says, having the guards meet the tyres again makes the 6R look brilliant.. the height of the OEM sport setup is too high as it stands imho

If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)

Thanks Pontiff, can you elaborate on this? Don't the Comfort Sports get pretty low? Or as low as the V1's without the ride stiffness?

from the KW website... so yes, the sport comforts do not go as low but in saying that.. Mr Death Lad can comment more authoratively as he has my (now his) V1's installed so you can find out what they are set for, but IIRC i had my fronts set about 1/3 down so that would cover the street comforts easily but i had the rears all the way down so the streets would not go as low as i had them.

As for the ride quality, i would say that the comforts would ride 'better' (read: softer) than the V1's and if i had my time again, i woudl have stumped up the extra cash and gone the comforts, live and learn...

i currently have the v1 rears at max low and am actually contemplating taking the adjuster perches out for another ~15mm drop but would then need new tyres (205/40 instead of 215/35r18 ) or to remove the arch liners to prevent rubbing. but thats just me. the fronts however are set with 40mm of thread left and again would need to change tyres or modify arch liners if going lower (they already scrub slightly on mid corner bumps when pushing hard). will go take some photos now to show how it looks... but as pontiff mentioned, what he thought was to stiff for him, is completely acceptable for me. the best thing to do would be find someone near you with coil-overs installed and see if you can drive their car to get a feel for the firmer ride and see if the firmness is OK.
