  • Rattle/clatter in Front passenger side

I have a distinct rattle/clatter that I can only surmise is coming from the front left hand side of my car. Now you have be attune to the car to hear it, as I took a fellow board member for a drive yesterday and he couldn't hear it, so I suspect its one of those noises that once you hear it once, you hear it all the time (or is it the marbles in my head?)

Over the past couple of days I have been paying particular attention to it, thinking that its related to my KW's that I recently installed, however the more I think and listen to it the more I think perhaps it 'may' be something else. The reason is that as I was going over the speed humps in the office car park today as you go over the bump you hear it rattle 3-4 times almost like a pendulum effect where you set it off once and it clatters 2-3 times, same thing when you drop over the other side of the hump you hear it a few times.

Now given the speed that I am going I don't think the suspension travels up and down more than the once as the ride is quite firm and i am not going that fast.

Usual caveats apply in that it does not do it 'all' the time but 'most of the time'.

I would call it almost like a dull plastic knocking sound, i.e it does not have that high pitch / sharpness that you would get from a metallic knock.

Just to discount the suspension next time I have the strut apart I will put the OEM one back in. Given the passenger side comes out really easy its not that much effort to try this.

However, Has anyone has anything similar (that they have managed to resolve) ?

It's not the clutches, I went with pontiff and I honestly couldn't hear it. What I could hear was the springs clattering but nothing else.

I've listened to BLN's video and that sounds like a swaybar squeak. If it is the top mount though, just wipe some rubber grease around the top of the mount and it should help.

My bad - i couldnt see which gearbox you had from Tapatalk so i took a guess at DSG as thats what 90% of people get. Us manual drivers are rare these days.

In that case, check to make sure the springs are seated correctly, check rebound if they are coilovers as poor adjustment can lead to the springs moving around.

That we are.... I don't know. .. these lazy DSG drivers

Anyway... with gavs help, it turned out that it is the transmission mount rubber knocking (or 'POC'ing as gavs so rightly called it). I took to it with some strategically placed pieces of folded cardboard and a rag and the noise has for the most part.... gone.

so there you go, any funky noises, check it out, but its certainly an odd one..

Nah my steering wheel is on the left side, and the noise was coming from front right, rattling fuel lines were the issue in my case. Will remember this one though! why knows when it comes in handy

                      Hey budd,

                      i have a similar issue,

I don't think its the dsg rattle on mine either.

I can only hear it with the passenger window down, and its almost a constant rattle...

Do you have pics of what you changed to get rid of the rattle??

                      Thanks a mil

Are you sure you guys are not hearing the turbo wastegate rattle? (This only applies to 1.2t 77tsi motors)

You can hear this low pitched rattle between 1050rpm and 1300rpm and low throttle.

For people WITHOUT the 29v9 service campaign a higher pitched rattle can be heard when free reving up to 2000rpm.

This is not DSG related but just the design of the turbo wastegate actuator (control rod). It is designed to have excessive slack on it to adapt to the shrinking and expanding of the metal from the hot exhaust. When the turbo is running hot it's got the correct tention on it but when it gets cooler (under light usage) it can rattle from the slack.

The 29v9 service campaign adds a shim to put more tention on the rod which reduces the rattle but will not eliminate it.

Nah thats not it (i have had the recall done.. or i have had 'some' recall done).

Mine is/was the transmission mount.. I have not changed it, I have just stuffed cardboard between the rubber and the cast alloy housing. Its 90% gone I would say, as you can hear it every now and then but its certainly bearable now. When I get a chance tomorrow I will remove the airbox and take a pic, but its pretty easy to describe.

The black part of what I assume to be the intake manifold (its got the engine number sticker on it) give the engine a shake while holding onto that and you should hear it. You can remove the airbox to make it easier to find if you want as that can rattle also, but i think thats more to do with the rubber grommets that they hold it on with, its only bolted down with 1xm10. Remove that and it should be easy to find. One of those vibratronics mounts i suspect would fix it 100% in my case, but the increase in NVH (anyone got them? are they any good?) may be a little too much given its now pretty firm with the Kw's in anyway, last thing i need is more harshness

Would like to see a photo of this mount. I don't think I have this problem (actually mine has been good for rattles) but would like to have a look anyway...
