I only have rough time frames but you had your original clutch material 3/2012< a second clutch material which still had problems 6/2012< and the latest which I got done in June 2012 which so far has had no problems. You may have just got the good ones or you might have the bad ones.

Also bad clutches will not throw up an error or light, you will notice it violently jerking between 1st and 2nd. It can also make a sound like scraping your fingernails on a chalkboard. The light you are probably referring to is probably the stability control (orange light, car with skid marks behind it) or the XDL light (if there is such a thing, I don't have a GTI so I honestly wouldn't know).

      Ah fair enough.

Nup, was definitely the engine / gearbox light. I regularly see the stability control light especially in the weather conditions NSW has at the moment
Hopefully just a minor burp. Didn't come up again after that.

Well there is no gearbox light, the light your referring to is engine only. Maybe it was misfiring due to poor fuel quality, or had briefly burnt some oil causing a misfire or throwing up an error with the O2 sensors (emissions standard). If the gearbox is having a problem the "D" or "S" on the MFD at the top right hand side will flash with a spanner an display service or something.

Also I have a newish polo with all the software updates regarding gear change points etc and my clutches still went at 15,000km. I replaced them, with new clutches which vw said have a harder clutch material and for 25,000km haven't had a problem since *touch wood* so I would say its the material not so much the software, though that does play a part.
Actually, it did play no part in the failure as found at time of disassembly, as Guy knows about. The piston controlling the k1 clutch looks to have over-extended in its travel resulting in the clutch actuator being locked on even though the piston did release. I have an independent report from a workshop that sells a competitors tune and they too agree that there is no way a tune caused my issue. I am still trying to chase answers but it's amazing that staff at VGA just always seem to be in perpetual meetings....

            Ah excellent, thanks so much.

I would have had a poke through my owners manual by now but it was misplaced at the dealer when I picked it up.

Yes they do allow for more stress in the clutches and everything in general but keep it in mind that you could chew through clutches more quickly and if you have a DSG clutch that's $2500 a hit to replace.

But then again it depends when and how it delivers 300 nm of torque, if its higher up in the rev range you should be fine as the clutch is fully engaged anyway.
I think you can get a DSG tune that allows 350NM from memory? Ask TorqueSteer, He's getting it.

                Somewhat reassuring! Thanks Gav.
I mean besides the DSG box and its apparent issues, at least it wasn't the tune that created a problem for you.

Also - the article in your sig is pretty interesting....

Mechatronics are a complex little device, but directly don't fail (as I mentioned) by increasing power and torque. The boxes seem pretty strong. If you want to see box failures, look at 9N polo GTI's - the ring gears come off the differential & blow a hole out of the case, seen at least a dozen do this.

Yet to see anything trying to exit out of a 6R Polo case yet (and we give ours a hard time).

When I was considering a golf wagon purchase I costed a towbar. The bar and the wiring kit are sold seperately (and cost twice as much as they should). Since I only really need it for a bike rack I mentioned that I might just get the bar and if I want to tow anything I could wire it myself. The salesman told me that the wiring must plug into the factory plug up front. If I spliced into the tail light wiring I would void warranty on the entire electrical system

This is true due to the complex BCM and CANBUS system in the car.

Guy repeats my info too, aside from the electronic gremlins, the actual mechanicals of the box are phenomenally strong.
