I need two new front tyres but what i'm planning is swapping the fronts with the rears.... but I'd buy four new tyres in time. What are your thoughts on these guys?

I can buy cheaper versions... (save a bit) ... I don't need performance tyres, most likely tyres that'll last me two years or a year and a half....

All of the 13.5 GTI's Iv seen have bridgestones from factory. 7 all up. It's not a region thing as two where vic and 5 in tassie.

KU-31's are an ok tyre, especially for the money but they wear out very quickly.... well not that they wear out per-se but they drop off in performance very quickly. Then they start wearing out. i had 235-45R17 on my Mk4 golf (look damn fat as!) and they lasted me 20,000-25,000 kms.

Can I just put it out there that it might be worth buying 2 decent performance tyres that have a higher wear rating and then buy the other 2 when you can afford it because if by chance oyu come to sell the car in 14 months time, prospective buyer could ask "hey, what's with the cheap Bob Jane all-rounders (or any other cheap tyre)?"

Just a thought.....

just got a quote from K-Mart for $174 balanced and fitted for the dunlops...

Kmart are surprisingly cheap. I got $222 each for a new set of Bridgestone RE002's fitted. One of the front dunlops egg'd

Dunlop SP Sport Maxx on my MY12.5 GTI as well.

I got a quote on bike tyres last night. $290 front another $250+ for the rear (no stock) +$80 for fit = $620.
Even if I went when they had 20% off - that's still $500+
I think I'll go back to the dealer that offered me $350 fitted for both. :| $620 - I can almost get four tyres for my GTI

Whatever you do please don't cheap on tyres they are the only thing holding you to the road. Nothing wrong with cheap tyres of you own an underpowered corolla and want to get to a to b in a straight line. But you have a polo gti , get tyres that will maximize the chassis.

Ah I see. Thanks guys. Won't go the cheaper ones BUT how are the Khumo tyres for $100 each? Or can I find tyres for $125 each, another brand... Any recommendations? Want tyres to last sometime as I do a bit of driving hence my mileage.. Thanks again.

Don't get ku31's then especially if you are going to push them. They are great for the price and are nice and quiet but they do wear out fairly quickly as I said.

For $125 a tyre you won't be getting a great tyre. The reason that many (not all but many) tyres on eBay are so cheap is due to the date of manufacture. People send back out I date tyres and somehow these brand new tyres pop up from time to time at prices that are so good that people think they're getting a bargain but you can e getting tyres way ou of their use by date and unlike from a dealer, you don't get the warranty on them either.

As mentioned, Kmart tyre & auto are pretty cheap as are jax quick fit.

Just shop around, look on US websites for comparisons because they have such a massive market they compare a lot of different tyres.

Been quoted $240 a corner for top o line Falken Super Ultra FL453's.

Tyre models lesser are obviously cheaper. That's at a tyre place where I just got the current fronts swapped with the rears, they'll last me til the end of winter then I'll do a full buy on 4x tyres.

GS-D3 aren't the same tyre as the Direct 5.

GS-D3 were a weird tyre (and they are a very old tread pattern - they came out about 12 years back). The Euro made ones were pretty good; the Asian made were lousy in all respects.

I can't comment on the Direct 5 as i've never seen it before.

Personally, I avoid directional tyres like the plague & would much prefer a premium quality assymetric tyre.
