9W7 Bluetooth Install - Help!

Hello,

So I undertook the install of the 9W7 unit today with a friend.

Was very suprised at how easy the install was - I'm not usually one to try these things. All the trim and panels are clipped on and amazingly simple to remove.

I have plugged everything in and upon testing the microphone doesn't work! I took the head unit out again and inspected the connections and they all look okay. I checked the mic connection and that too looks good.

I can hear the other party on the phone system but there is not a squeak out of mine.

My friend swears that he heard while the head unit was removed for the second time.

Any suggestions? Could it be a faulty mic?

What head unit are you connecting it to? Do you have an existing microphone in the head lining near the overhead map lights? If not what sort of microphone are you using (installed in the head lining, or a button mic stuck on the A-pillar or something)?

Connecting to the RCD510 that came with the car.

Connecting to what I believe is an OEM mic that came with the kit. I routed the wire through the A-pillar and stuck it on the designated tab in the comfort light assembly grill.

If you have access to VCDS you can check for fault codes, see if you get an open circuit on the mic input. Either way you will need to check the mic input is actually connected to the correct pins on the BT module, and not to the mic in on the RCD510.

I'm still waiting on my VCDS to turn up - should be here Monday/Tuesday.

The mic is plugged into the receiver port in the supplied wiring harness extension. I may get a voltmeter and see if there is actual power to it.

Check where the pins in the harness actually connect. You need to make sure they go to the mic+ and - pins on the BT module.
You can move the pins to the correct ports on the harness if needed. I needed to swap some pins on my BT module install in order to have them go to the mic in ports on my RNS510 rather than direct to the BT module. You may have to do the opposite.

You need the VCD cable to "turn on" the microphone. I run a RCD500 and the mic wouldn't work until i got it programed. Do that and it will work.

Thanks. I'll try what ctsb_87 suggested below and if it doesn't work will start checking the cable.

Although that would be a bit strange since the cable already came pre-wired by the supplier who has quite good reviews throughout. Ah well.

My VCDS turned up today. I still can't figure out how to get the mic 'turned-on'. What do I need to do?

Also, I've tried searching but haven't had much luck. What do I need to enter in the 77-Telephone Module to get the Bluetooth unit working in the MFD - I'm still very new to this and am absolutely clueless.

I'm having the same problem, can we confirm that the microphone needs to be coded with VCDS? I know the steering wheel and MFD need to be 'activated' with the computer- but the head unit functions work fine and I can call people, they just can't hear me.

The 9w7 and 9w2 kits i fit i have no issues with the mic. The only reason i code them to the car is for full function...ie. display on RCD, MFD and steering wheel controls....may be your BT ecu is stuffed. Mic should work straight away on install. Where did you get the kit from?

It's a full OEM kit from Europe. No wiring required, plug straight in with a VW loom.
