  • DSG "False Neutral" Yesterday...

I had (for the first time) the DSG failing on me yesterday, wasn't a great experience in afternoon traffic. I was in manual transmission and came to a set of lights once the lights went green I went to accelerate and got no throttle at all and almost seemed like the car was going conk out! It struggled to take off as I tried changing transmissions but nothing was helping.
This lasted for about 30 seconds. I then went to reverse to avoid the impatience traffic abusers continuous honking at me and all of a sudden it came back to life. I have no idea what it was nor what fixed it?

I then left it auto for the remainder of the trip home.

Anyone had this issue before?? I also experience static idling when I start the car most mornings as well

    Thanks

I would take it back to the dealership and get them to scan for fault codes and look into a replacement mechatronics unit.

Can't do that yet as I bought this car second hand so the ownership hasn't been transferred over yet and honestly everytime I call to make a booking they always say I'll call back. Yeah that was Monday and still nothing...

isn't there a service campaign on a DSG software upgrade, I'd be checking to see if that has been done.

Not transferring ownership doesn't matter if the car is still under warranty...

I think I have seen evidence of this on Youtube etc.
Best advice until then is leave it in D when driving in traffic. If it occurs then put in Park and restart car?

I've had this when I first got the car also using manual. I was using manual mode constantly and not using the auto/dsg at all. I thought it was the way I was driving and trying to avoid activating the hill hold feature. I started using the DSG and only dropping into manual occasionally and it hasn't happened since, but generally I think my transmission is a little clunky and dull witted which i'm hoping will be resolved with the software upgrade. if there's no difference I'll bring it up during the first service.

What you have experienced is what golf owners started calling the "false neutral" phenomenon. It seems on the surface to be more prevalent in the 7spd DSG cars.

First off, you are not alone, many people have had it happen. Secondly, it is not your dsg "breaking down" or failing. It is a software issue that stops the gearbox from engaging properly. I have spoken with a service tech on this and he explained to me (Umai Na might help confirm this) that the dsg has an inbuilt safety measure that prevents the clutches from overheating. If they get too hot then the clutch will disengage, not what you want when you are trying to take off in a hurry. As I have found, it is more likely to happen in traffic, especially after a spirited run so this could be one possibility.

Personally I have tried to replicate the phenomenon and have been able to which leads me to believe that it could be linked to the hill hold feature as well because that is how I have been able to replicate it but replicating it isn't an exact science either but again, it's only in manual mode so this could be linked to the clutches overheating and disengaging.

Hey I was going to mention also that I was on a slight hill when it happened and I did just end a heated run. I also realized I should let the car heat up before giving it a little push. I think you hit the nail on the head, I'll mention it to the VW service guys and see what they say.

The VW service guy told me that the campaign 37G7 DSG update was just a European update for when storing the car after long periods of time the DSG can fail upon restart, this prevents that and that the update serviced no other purpose!

Gavs, VW should be paying you a 'goodwill' commission. You always have an in depth answer.

Yes, and the moon is made of green cheese.

Seriously, some of these answers are so good they have to be taught how to bulltish customers! How can a mechanical item fail from being stored for a Lon period of time? What is the technical definition of "a long period of time"? When forcebly watching sex and the city, half an hour is a long period of time for me!
