  • extended waranty

Hi i picked up my polo gti from dealer today and asked about the extended waranty and was told it has just gone from 3 years to 2 and doubled in price wtf does anyone know if it can be brought after you have brought the car he told me you cant get it after you leave the showroom seemed like bull to me .

There's a huge thread somewhere - try the sticky in the MkV Golf area

You can buy any time during the warranty period. You can buy from any dealer.

Try some of the contacts in the thread that will sell at a discount.

Where did you make your enquiries & was that the factory warranty underwritten by Alliance? Many of the dealers try & steer you into more profitable warranties from different providers.

I was asking around for my cars and was asked for purchase & build dates as well as current km... Starting to wonder if prices vary depending on *when* you purchase the warranty??

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

yes seems there is a discount if you buy before you take delivery, but who knows what can happen with 3 years of ownership as there is no money back if your car is totaled and im not 100% sure that all can be transferred to the new owner...

I wish you guys would read the PDS rather than just making stuff up.

Fact: You can cash in the policy for the cost of an admin fee (there are some reasonable exclusions - read the PDS).
Fact: The policy is transferable to a new owner.

It's all in the PDS in B&W & plain English.

Also, the price has nothing to do with buying before or after take delivery. The dealer might make out there is but I'd guarantee if you are offered price X before purchase & you went back after purchase, the dealer can do the same price. The dealer WILL tell porkies to get a sale

Do yourself a favour & contact some of the dealers that will discount the policy. They are in the thread in the MKV section.

You were aware that you can buy from any dealer in AUS?

I will read that huge thread, but as a buyer one can only start from the info that they get told when ordering their car which is as current as possible since it was quoted just the other day.... and at that time the dealer didnt offer me a PDS just told me the price to try and make a sale i guess, they never offered me any brochure / paperwork.

So if you are saying all the extended warranties have the same rules and your 'facts' above hold true for all of these, and assuming what you say about price info above is correct then I wont worry about buying one of these right away.

Anyway, to make up a price as a 'pre-purchase discount' that is the same as the normal price to get 'suckers' to pay up front when they dont have to, is called gaining money by deception isnt it? If so then I dont understand how they can get away with it?

If it saves you $500-1000 then it's probably worth the time.

No, as a buyer of a financial product you have to read the PDS. You even sign a document that says you've read & understand the terms & conditions. There is a copy of the PDS on the VW website.
Yes, the salesman should give you a price & try & make a sale. That's his job & he should attempt to get full price for it. It's up to the informed purchaser to question the offer & make a counter-offer or reject the salesman's offer.

Lets face it, as a buyer of any major good or service it would be foolish to present yourself to a salesperson without a certain level of preparation & research.

No, I said the VW extended warranty underwritten by Alliance offers those conditions. It's all in the PDS.

I can't comment on other warranties as I haven't read the PDS. Dealerships offer a number of warranties from different underwriters with vastly different T&Cs. They are not obliged to make the VW Extended Warranty the first offer to the customer.

I'd almost guarantee that everything the salesman did was within the boundaries of the law. Given that he tried to sucker you, maybe you should try a different dealer or a different salesman in the same dealership. Make it known why you choose to go elsewhere. Generally, salesmen aren't overly friendly with each other as they often screw each other over for a sale.

Well i hear what youre saying. Anyway, my story is that I went to a dealer and drove a car, liked it and ordered it, like anyone else would. The next thing they did was spring the 'you should buy an extended warranty!' on me... er, WTF?! i dont even have the car yet... its months away! I didnt expect that kind of upsell so hadnt researched it. I have now. After a lot of time spent doing so I would comment that the huge thread really should be edited and manged (perhaps with a summary) if it is to be a sticky thread and be classed as 'useful'; right now its 64 pages of recurring questions littered with out of date products and pricing, but I will concur that yes it does prove that by ringing round the dealers you can get the same warranty product cheaper, but as most of the info in the thread is now very out of date, I suggest people start about 10pages back from the end and read from there.

Anyway, Im not the OP of this thread and so I will bow out now, I dont even need an extended warranty for 3+ years since i dont even have a car on my driveway yet, and wont have for months - by the time i need one, the products and people involved will all have changed again.

The upsell still isn't over. You still have the big-boobed lady with the low cut top that sells tint/paint protection/ fabric protection & scratch insurance to deal with at delivery. Like drugs, you should just say no.

LOL, I always say know to anything with 'protection' in the title when its from a car dealer, its like never staying in a hotel with the word 'quality' in its name!
