I've just gone out and bought an SD card and put my music on there and am using it in the head unit (RCD-510 here, so it may be different functionality).

Makes no difference, no audio comes out.

iPhone 5 connected to VW PHONE, and when playing music, speaker output is even selected as VW PHONE.

    I'm thinking either:
    1) The bluetooth unit needs to be upgraded... not sure what is installed on the 77TSI, may be different from GTI
    2) The system needs to be upgraded from RCD310 to RCD510...
    3) Some type of vagcom work needs to be done
    4) Some or all of the above.

The problem with this thread is that it refers to RCD510 and/or GTI models with MDF, but not RCD310 / non GTI models without MDF.

Any clues? I would hate to upgrade the wrong thing...

The quality will be superior to BT, good choice.

Ok... Actually, I think on my Android, there is even a separate Bluetooth Media Volume...

just checking... I wish it had been that simple... Good luck.

              • I have never managed to get bluetooth audio working on my tsi either. I have an android phone with standard touch adapter. While the phone says media is playing through bluetooth I get no sound. I just assumed that it doesnt work. Same as messages and voice dialling names. Would be very interested to hear if any non gti owners with rcd310 have got any of that working. Other than answering incoming calls I find it useless. I could be just bluetooth retarded. I only just worked out you can change display settings on the stupid screen thingie. I have 2 fixes for the audio. I copied music onto a usb stick and leave it in the glovebox mdi. I bought a retractable cable for the aux-in socket.

                • Hey, I cracked it! Perseverance paid off.

First, on the rcd310 press menu button, press setup, press bt-audio to make sure it is ON.
Second, on the touch adapter press more, scroll down, press settings, press audio, make sure the mobile audio option is checked.

When all the people above said the sound quality would be crap I thought it would be OK, just not CD quality. I just found that it is grandpa's old transistor radio crap. Honestly, it is worse than my phone speaker. It is probably only useful for navigation (havent tried it)

umm, i think you should read the thread in full... we already know this. the phone connects via BT to the cradle and again via BT to the car, hence bad quality. hence why im trying to connect directly via BT to the car bypassing the cradle.

this is the problem. there are various solutions in this thread, but only for the RCD510 and GTI.

Ok, i've checked the bluetooth unit and I think its the latest one (9w7), doesn't say 9w7, just says:
                      706 035 730 L
                      SW: 3200 HW: H15
                      Model: UHV
                      MCD: SJA 39/12
I think this is the 9w7 as googling around it seems to be it. Also, the 9w7 is the only one that will support audio stream and controls and appears as VW PHONE.

I don't think the RCD310 needs to be upgraded, the 9w7 BT unit should connect up the the RCD310.

So i'm thinking vagcom now. maybe software updated needed for iphone 5.1?

Going to try a different phone see how that goes.

No luck with different phone. Also noticed you can only connect to VW Phone with the adapter in place. So i think need to do something to the vagcom.

I tried streaming through my touch adapter (iPhone) and I had the same experience. Woeful quality. I have since removed the RCD310 and replaced with a RCD510 (10 minute job anyone can do for about $300) and now have EXCELLENT quality audio streaming, about as good as CD or SD card etc, it really depends on how good your mp3s are to begin with. My phone (usually) pairs with the RCD510 and will commence streaming right away sometimes I may have to hit un-pause on the RCD510. Sometimes my touch adapter will fight and pair with the RCD510 (yes, seriously dumb!) and other times the audio will stream but wont show track names etc. Somewhat annoying, but it is rare that this will happen.... really need to code out the POS touch adapter!

                          • Bluetooth Streaming uses compression, which loses quality of the audio you are broadcasting.
An MP3 Streamed through bluetooth will have inferior quality to the same MP3 played via SD or MDI

Not all a2dp streamers are created equal, some can handle high bitrates and some are just thrown together. The touch unit is terrible but the actual BT unit does a good job, AFAIK with the iphone it isn't re-encoding them at all, just streaming the data direct.

The digital to analogue converter in the VW BT unit still isn't as good as the stereo's/mdi/iphones though

Yes if you take out the touch adapter the VW Phone unit will shut down, hence the VCDS coding. Check my sig for more info
