  • CTHE engine? anyone know what to expect?

Ive just ordered a Polo GTI and seems from what ive read that I could be getting a CTHE engine instead of the CAVE... From what has been said, from May this year all Polo GTI's will get the new engine...

Things ive deduced are that the CTHE may well be 'turbo only' with no supercharger. The CTHE turbo may have 3 stage boost and a few more bhp than the CAVE... If this is true then it could seen VW cant design themselves out of the problems they have suffered with the TSi engines, which is a shame.

Im waiting for a call back from VGA, but since there is little online im doubting VW will tell me anything, which is kind of unimpressive as it would appear the car I ordered wont be the car i will get delivered... it might be better, but then again...

So... anyone know anything new on this? or is it just a rumour and nothing more?

CTHE is to have the same power and torque figures as CAVE so don't be surprised if the power and forced induction delivery are the same. Look for the differences to be internal rather than external, along the lines of the differences between the 2 1.8 Turbo motors in the Mk4 Golf GTI. I would say new pistons and rings from the factory would be a good starting point, along with better ECU programming maybe, also potentially a bigger intercooler and/or radiator because aside from the oil consuption and squealing supercharger clutches, the major issues for these engines is heat. Something they might have deduced if the labour-party flogs in the NT never introduced the130kph speed limit that now kills more people than it saves so auto companies could still come and do hot weather, high speed testing without the fear of ending up in a ditch on the side of the road. (rant over!)

Just to let you know also, ERWIN list up the repair manuals already for the 8 speed auto and 2.0 TSI petrol motor for the Amarok and that's not due for several months either, nothing regarding new engines for the 6R polo, especially CTHE so don't hold your breath because even now with only 2 months until the supposed introduction to production lines, this is still a rumour.

Cheers mate, your input is appreciated. VW called me back but were vague about the answer to my question and wanted my commission number before answering anything for me, which is interesting... The same guy also said the comfort pack was not now part of the MY12 spec, which the last customer service guy told me absolutely was when he read it out of the 12.5 spec sheet... now that's confusing?! im not sure what they are up to?!

Just an update of the CAV engine. Nothing special.

Engines get up dated all the time.

cool, that puts my mind at rest, I read a bunch of rumour that VW was dropping the supercharger and going for a turbo only motor. And yes, whilst I'm pretty sure it would be fine, its just that if that was the case then naturally id like to know more about it since ive just dropped my coin on an order etc.

VW customer services veiled assertion that I was prying when I queried the forced induction got me a bit concerned, all they would say was 'its an inline 4 cylinder 1.4 liter...' and then they clammed up.

That date refers to the fitment date at the factory.

I imagine it would be many, many months after May before we'll actually see them in Australia.

True. I was told cars built in July will arrive in Sept.

Since when are there 2 different mk4 gti motors ? The only thing that changed with the gti was the 99 model had different ecu/ can bus system compared to 2000-2005 models . The actual motor/turbo was all the same

Yes, true, which came with revised power and torque figures so that would be classified as different, would it not? It also came with a different engine code as I understand it which changed in the 2002 update.
