Click on link then select interior option. There is a more practical sill cover in the top right picture that covers all the vulnerable area -not just the narrow platform at the top.

I got the silver VW one, it was fitted when I bought my car. Not sure how much it cost as it came with the car. Looks the goods though.

I got mine (5 door) from a dealer for $230. My wifey installed it because she's good like that But it was for her car and it did come with instructions.

Makes a difference, good contrast from just stark painted metal.

i got gloss black vinyl wrap, and wrapped the entire section. looks great, protects paint, something a little different.

That seems a great option since I would prefer something very discreet if possible. Though with the installation, does it cover all the way down to the lip just above where the stone proof paint begins? That actually seems the most vulnerable area to me...

I see an Australian company sells a DYI door sill kit using the 3M film. It would be perfect and since the application area is flat and rectangular, even I could probably manage it. But the strips are 7 cm wide, which means they will do the top bit only (will have to measure the door sill today).

Anyway, photos would be great please. Thank you.

Yes, correct. From your link, the description for it is "Door Sill Protective Strip" in the Interior section. The one with the word "Polo" inscribed on the aluminium panel.

Instructions are from Germany, so it's quite precise But it's all about having a point of reference, and having the sill stuck on. It's one those things you take your time to do, and not rush - and the better the end result will be. But yeah, any person with average hands can tackle it.

Thanks. I just got off the phone from the local VW Parts department and they confirmed there are two styles as per the photos on the Phil McCarroll website. There is the aluminium scuff plate you mention plus the much wider protection which is apparently (though I am not certain) self adhesive vinyl. This is the one that covers the entire width of the sill from the rubber door frame seal right to the inside edge of the stoneguard paint.

The latter kit is around $140. I asked him if he knew how difficult it was to fit and he said this was the first one he had ever had to order, so no one there knows exactly how it works. Given no one there has ever fitted one I wil probably just drive to my mother's house and see if she can help me fit it (she was an expert "book coverer" and "wall-paperer" in her time). So I would probably trust her to do it at least as well as a VW mechanic. But if it looks all too hard then better the dealership do it so they have the liability if they stuff it up and need another kit Apparently the approved VW fitment time for this accessory is 30 minutes for all four doors, so it is probably not too difficult if some commonsense and patience is exercised.

HOW TO APPLY IT

You need 2 spray bottles

1 squeegee as sold by Ozshield

The film cut to size

1st spray bottle has water with a teaspoon of dishwash liquid in it

2nd one has diluted isopropyl alcohol in it. $6 a bottle at Bunnings

Clean sills with meths and dry off

Spray sill with water solution one at a time

Strip the backing partially off the film and liberally spray with water solution Work it down so you never touch the sticky side Drop it onto the sill and pull remaining backing out. Then move it to where you want it If plenty of water will just slide around

If its exactly where you want it lift up a corner and spray soame alcohol under that and squeegee it down That will hold it in place

YOU CANT MOVE IT AFTER DOING THIS.

Working from the middle squeegee the water and air out completely.

Make sure all bubbles are out and you are finished.


Sounds easy Its not quite but sills are Ok as they are even The rear bumper on the Passat was a different thing altogether.

I have enough film here and can cut it to size as on my car for $65 plus postage for you

You also should buy some Plexus plastic polish from a motorbike shop to keep it from absorbing any water. Is about $26 a spraycan
