I don't know about the rest of you, but it's nice to own the "top of the range" of a particular model; so people who bought Polo GTI's thinking it would be best Polo money could buy might feel a little disappointed.

It's like I'd almost prefer an RS4 over an R8 V8 simply because the RS4 was the best A4 Audi could make, whereas the V8 R8 is the inferior version of the V10; silly I know! Actually, I'd still take an R8 V8 actually, come to think about it, but nonetheless the same feeling exists.
Yeah VW are doing funny things atm, I especially dont like how they automatically just stop making the VW Golf R 3door, just for the ****ty looking Scirocco R. Like the market place for 3door Golf R's IMO is pretty much on the high side

They haven't stopped making 3 door R's they've just stopped selling them here... If you try hard enough, go to the right dealer and beg enough you can still get one... It's just a lot harder

I think VW have done the numbers on 3 Door Rs and saw that there isn't much damage to sales if they delete it. Remember they never intended to import it until certain enthusiasts complain. Now I assume these people have bought their 3 door R and VW can quietly drop it

so I can order a fully kitted out 3door to my specifications (eg black, sunroof, leather, etc) or will they just try and match a car that is already on its way to australia?

You'll have to ring a dealer and see. Though 3door Golf R pricing has disappeared from the VW site. It would suggest that no more cars are on the way either

Although I love my little Polo, I'd be closer to getting the new Toyota 86 / Subaru thing than this. If they could make it RWD without being a total handling nightmare (doubt it), that would be a cool combo...

You'd have to find a dealer who orders a LOT of cars and ask them really nicely haha, it's just like red R's, they weren't meant to be sold ere but I've heard of 2 or 3 that have made it here

At least there's a massive tuning community which will sort this little problem out fairly quickly. I dare say there'll be a number of 86's which go straight from the showroom to a workshop to have a built EJ25 dropped in.

It's not quite that easy... different engine range.

Why is everyone so bummed about this motor? Its pretty crazy for a NA 2 Liter. KW wise the Golf GTI only makes 7 more, and the lighter weight helps combat the low torque

It is? Civic Type Rs have has similar outputs for years (even in this market). So has the Clio RS200. They just don't feel fast.

                                This.
Also the "bang for your buck" tuning potential is a lot more limited.
