  • Dusk Sensing Headlights

Hey - the GTI doesn't come with dusk sensing auto headlights does it (even with Comfort pack)? That's a little annoying!

Is there a way to install an aftermarket dusk sensor (or one from another VW car...??)???

There is a way (found it on a german forum) but believe me when i say it isn't worth the time, it's not just plugging in a sensor, the parts list out of VW is as long as your arm and we all know what VW parts prices are like

This is probably my #1 peeve with the car.. I would have gladly paid for it as an option but it wasn't available - surely auto sensing lights would be almost a standard these days!

I'm not from a automotive background, but I have noticed that the car does have some sort of light sensor that turns off the dashboard backlights when you enter a tunnel, or an underground carpark. If that sensor is used as an afferent, how difficult is it to build it into one of the headlight modes, say... park. Just food for thought. Btw I have a GTI, not sure if that changes anything.

Damn, my dyslexia kicked in for a second and I thought you were asking about 'duck' sensing headlights....

Yeah those damn ducks need sensing alright!!

On another note I don't get the point of Auto headlights or wipers...if its dark you turn the lights on, if its wet you turn the wipers on, or am I missing something obvious?

In Tokyo, I stepped into a cubicle, and the toilet seat lifted automatically.
So maybe we are almost there.....

I'm sure there will be many people here that have walked into a car park at night with its bright well-lit spaces and neglected to switch the lights on (on account of it not being "dark") only to drive out and forget to switch them on!

In one moment of stupidity I drove all the way through the melbourne CBD to Port Melbourne before realising. Only upon driving into a dimly lit street did I notice!

P.S. This is not really a problem if your dash/instruments don't light up automatically. A pitch black dash is a pretty obvious sign to switch your lights on.

Lack of auto headlights is naff especially when the xenons are optioned. I hear what people say about just turing them on when it gets dark but when I had them in my second Cooper S it was cool going into tunnels and car parks and they'd come on automatically. My first Cooper S didn't have them and it was annoying going into tunnels because the instruments weren't lit and you generally couldn't tell what speed your were going unless you turned your headlights on.

Also, on the Minis the rain sensors doubled as the light sensor.

                        Huh ?

                        The MKV has them.

                        What am I missing.

I like them on my GTI. Not as a labour saving device but because I can focus more on the drive, not a switch.

My comment still applies about the usefulness of them

My wife's 5 year old Peugeot has auto headlights. So, I've gotten used to them. It's not a deal breaker, but it's a nice to have. I suspect it's one of the things that VW have done to provide a differentiation between the Polo and the Golf.
