The factory position for the gps antenna is actually the sharkfin antenna on the roof.

The blue one is the GPS (white is phone, plum is AM/FM) but sadly there is no cable running from the back of the Polo to the front (and you'd need to take off a bunch of panels to run one) . The best spot to put it is on the top of the AC vents, it seems to get a good amount of satellites there.MY16 Octavia RS 162 Race Blue Combi

I used to work for the OEM manufacturer of sat nav systems for Toyota vehicles.
As long as there is a "clear view" to the sky from your location (ie. No metal above the antenna) then you will be able to get enough signal.
As readerrOr points out, the official location is the best but there is a lot of work to retrofit.

The cable to the rear? There's a VW number, but this is much much cheaper @ ~$15 total.

I bought one a while ago but it's waiting for when I do an audio install. 5 Meters should be enough but you can ask for an extra 50cm for free
To be honest, I've haven't had issues with my current one under the vent (which is supplied with units you get from eBay), though I imagine that the signal would be much better undercover and around tall buildings with the sharkfin.MY16 Octavia RS 162 Race Blue Combi

Hooray - this is where I ended up putting my GPS antenna, and someone agrees it's a good place!
The driver's side A pillar has no other wires on it in my GTI, and I ran the mic and 3G antenna down the passenger side A pillar, so there was plenty of space. I ended up using electrical tape all the way down the corner of the pillar to hold the wire clear of those scary clips too.
EDIT: I'll put a photo in if I take that pillar off again, but for now I want to let my poor fingers recover. It's NOT a fun piece of trim to remove!MY12 Polo GTI

Couple of questions for those who have done this install.
1) What is required from a VCDS perspective to get the Satnav directions to appear on the MFD+ of a GTI?
2) Is there any requirement to actually run the antenna into the door? I've read that the fin antenna on at least the GTI has an extra green cable/connector that drops down behind the factory installed RCD510 to provide GPS connectivity?
Thanks!MY12.5 Candy White 5 door Polo GTI. Upgrades/Mods = RNS510 H LED, RVC camera, Auto Lights Dash Sound Actuator GTI button, Gavs Footrest(!)
