Why not stick with the 215/40/17s that came with the car?

Shouldn't be any issues given only 1mm difference in offset and your rolling diameter won't change.

thats what i'd be doing but i doubt the 225s will rub unless the car is lowered heaps

Um... if the car came with 215/40/17's, why would you be putting 225/45/17's?
Those tyres are over 3% out of spec to the original rolling circumference. In fact, they're 5.054% out! This means the speedo will be running 5.054% too slow (thankfully the VW's are usually 7% too fast anyway).

But either way, you've gone the wrong way. You should have 225/40/17's which would then only be 1.308% too slow.
Even a 225/35/17 which would be closer to spec, at 2.457% too fast.

However.. a 225/40/17 is not recommended for a 7" width wheel. The profile is too small to squish the tyre onto a 7" wide rim. You'd need a 7.5" wide rim. Therefore if you MUST run 225 width tyres rather than the original 215, then you're pretty much stuck with the incorrect sized tyres....

^ yeah I may even just run them on track days and motorkhanas once a month so won't be the daily driven wheel and tyre setup.

Well scrap my wheel idea, these wheels do not fit, the center bore is too small to mount to the vw hub. These wheels are pcd 5x100 off a Subaru, just thought they would for but obviously not. thus trying to sell them back into the subby crowd. Oh well back to square one

Dam those wheels are hot. If they fit the 9n3s I might be interested to buy them =]

OK, just took some crappy shots with my iPhone on a white GTI with painted stock wheels in Moonee Ponds, VIC.
Hey Gav, someone beat you to it buddy Although I really love bigfoots wheels, it's just hard to replace the stock wheels as they are. It almost seems you lose that GTI originality What do you guys think? In the meantime enjoy!

What was the fitment issue? Is it the center bore or PCD?
