  • I am not sure what to make of the gloss black v graphite wheels, especially having seen the white polo photos GTI Joe posted earlier. I am thinking maybe graphite with a white stripe around the tyre sidewall...hopefully that helps the contrast and makes the wheels look bigger when they are in motion?

But what are the opinions on white rims on a white GTI?

It can look really cool, but not those ones on the H&R Polo, and would be a bastard to keep clean.

      • I have a question if anyone knows the answer.
What is the difference between painting and powder coating wheels, in terms of finished look.
I want a super glossy look that will be able to equal my cars shine when polished and am not sure what would give a better result.
I can get 4 wheels powder coated for $300, dunno how much for painting yet but i imagine a bit more?

        • Powdercoat will not give you the same luster and shine like painting will,it is a softer surface unless you get a specific engineered coating. It is also less forgiving regarding cleaners and chemicals. That being said, it is less likely to chip due to being softer and more pliable.

Wheels are painted from the factory anyway so take a look at painting

Thanks gavs , maybe painting will be a better option for me then.
Anyone know what i should be paying the get 4 wheels painted? I know panel shops can often rip you hard.
            Any recommendations?

Those motorsport rims look freaking hot.. I'd be curious to see what they look like on the car. I might even change my opinion of black wheels on white! $$$! however .

Anyone had any luck sourcing 17" Detroits? I'm still gutted NZ get them as such a cheap option.

                • Surely if they're so readily available for NZers, there'll be a way Aussies can get them eventually. They do put the Denvers to shame, that's for sure. I'd jump on them as an option.

How much was the option for NZers?

That's insane! Especially when you consider it's a $1200 extra for 18" Detroits on the Golf GTI. I would have jumped at that price!!!

                            • You guys can always do what several of the MKV and MKVI Golf boys have done.

Just got to a paint shop or wheel repair shop, and get them to mask off the face and paint the interior and "sides of the spokes" so it looks like the Detroit. The only difference is that the Detroits (at least on a Golf) have a machined front facia... though many people wouldn't notice the diff and people who have kerbed their "real" Detroits have wished it wasn't machined (since it's difficult to impossible to repair).

I'm pretty sure that the Detroits are actually styled after a few of the original MKV boys did this several years ago...

                              • That's a brill idea Corey! Have you got any photos of some people who've tried that on their Denvers?
