  • Put the polo back on the boavistas yesterday to give the Aristos a proper cleaning and maybe a play with plastidip. Raised the front 5mm to stop the scrapping when #becausewrccar but with the narrower boas on, it probably could handle at the height it was.

    • Yesterday I covered the reflectors in camo green wrap and also matted the tails with the smoke plastidip...not the clear. 3 light coats of smoke is perfect.

Holy bejeezus!!! Matt the vinyl wrapper must be littering his pics around the interwebs. This was taken the day I picked up the car after completion and when the old wheels were still on the car. Also stumbled across the same image on VWGolf.net. Those photos aren't so great and don't give a true indication how good the wrap looks.

It's a bit hard to see the full matte effect on the tails but in reality it looks neat and has removed the glossy look without being very dark.

                • Not as shiny as some of the other mods on here, but I replaced the fabric centre armrest with a faux-leather one.
Not sure how much the genuine VW one would cost, but this one was USD$25 delivered from eBay.
Despite not having a polo on the list, I emailed them and here we are

You had a 'fabric' centre armrest in your GTI? Surely that is a first

If you have the Jacky interior, it's a ****ty fabric centre armrest, which collects dead skin :|

Doh!...I honestly didn't know that because I've got the heated alcantara seats which doesn't have the fabric armrest.

                        • If you fancy keeping the red stitching theme going, there's a real leather replacement armrest cover available on Ebay. You'll end up, as I did, with something like this:

                          Full details here on UK-POLOS.NET.

Yeah, I'd wanted something like that, but maybe not with double-stiching.
I didn't see that when I was looking - but I suspect its actually something like this pad - which needs you to remove your original padding and glue this one on?
I also wonder if it feels strange, given it's raised a little for the stitching.

                              • To my eye, the stitching matches the other red stitching pretty well, but each his own of course .

It was a bit of a game to install. You have to do it out of the car or you'll never get a good result. You remove the top part of the armrest from the body (carefully, from behind!) and you then disassemble the top part by popping the interior plastic away from the fabric surround. This exposes the staples that hold the fabric in place (there is a cushioning pad under the fabric). De-staple the old fabric cover and then carefully re-staple the new leather cover with original cushioning pad back into place, taking care to keep the stitching straight. Clip the plastic insert back in which hides the staples and gives the armrest some rigidity, then clip the top part of the armrest back into the body of the armrest and you're done. It took me about an hour.

It's about 95% OEM in look. If I was being really picky, the leather is "shinier" and very slightly darker than the leather that surrounds the handbrake and gear lever. If they could get the matt look, it would be perfect.
