Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm not sure what you mean "with oil like that". Do you mean oil that gets sent for analysis at a lab & comes back with a big smiley face against it after 15,000km?

Seriously, show me the real life examples of a modern VW engine running 504/507 under standard operating conditions (not severe service, which would need more frequent changing), changed every 15,000/12 months that has gone to God because of a lubrication issue.

I and everyone else I've spoken to thinks this is completely stupid especially on a turbo car, this forum only further confirms that for me.. but whats the best way to confront VW and get an oil change at say the 5-8k mark?

Also I'm waiting for my dealership to get back from christmas break as my Polo seems to have gone through most its oil since its 1500k checkup (sitting on 3000k now), its only just above the bottom of the studded line (best way to describe it) which i take it is the 1 qtr mark.
I seem to have lost power and it will on occasion stall, not sitting in a gear and not even using the clutch.. once it did it while i was out opening my garage door.
Ring the dealership, tell them you operate the car under severe service conditions (short trips & stop/start traffic) & book it in for an oil & filter change)

So going by this logic I should be changing my oil every other month in my golf r.. this seems a bit extreme to me... work in the mines and travel 2000km every 8 days

Driving long distances is much easier on the oil. The oil deteriorate the most during warming up periods. Unless you drive constantly at very hi-speed on hwy (you know what I mean ), you will be perfectly OK with 15,000km oil/filter changes. You could actually benefit from the flexible servicing intervals.

Ok so I'll be trying the dealership again tomorrow, I'm going to talk to them and see what they say about the oil, although I will probably ask for a change at 5k anyway to be sure.
One last question though, the oil in it at the moment after 3000km's is dirt brown, my experience with oil is only with cars that have done 150,000+ km's and it was always a golden yellow. Is this normal? do they put a denser oil in the car from new?

No, this is the case of contaminents getting into the oil system, usually view blockback or through the turbo seals. 3,000km before seeing affects of wear on the oil is normal for a petrol turbo car.
