  • Oil Consumption

    Hi Guys,

I have been topping up the oil on the Polo, since getting it I have topped it up with 700ml. It has done around 10,500KM's, is it normal for it to use that much?

    Thanks

Just picked up my Polo 77TSI on the weekend. Salesperson said that even though services are 12 monthly, that you need to check oil on at least a six monthly basis and correct oil can be purchased through them. From that I assumed it will use some oil - not sure whether 700ml is more than they expect or not.

That's normal and actually quite good.

What he should say to you is that you should check it every 1-2 weeks (depends how many km's you drive) or 500km

Try 4L in the first 15,000km in my 90TSI. Since the service it seems to have settled down and has hardly used anything in the 3k since. It was a bit of a shock to me after having two cars that never used anything in 200k+ and 300k+

Well maybe I wasn't listening as muchas I should and she could have said 6 weeks not 6 months. I am too used to
Golf GTI were for 5 years have not had to put a drop of oil in them. I will take your comments on board and check regularly.

You'd be amazed how much of that is going through the engine via the blowby, but still sounds very normal for any new car I've run in.

Most turbo 4cyl motors will use ~1L of oil every 1000km. To only fill up 700mL after 10k is very little usage (although my question for you would be why on earth are you leaving servicing that late?! Every 5,000km for turbo cars is ideal.... but even 7,500km can be stretched if you drive it quite sedately. I certainly wouldn't be leaving them the 15,000km that VW recommend)

Really? My Polo GTI (APR'd) doesn't use anywhere near 1L/1000km....
Though I have to agree that 700ml/10000km is hardly any oil at all.

Really depends on a number of factors, such as the viscosity of the oil, the type of turbo, how the car is driven, how the manufacturer handles blow-by etc.

I know my old GIAC'd Polo GTI used less then the typical 1L/1000km rate, but other turbo cars I've owned (MY05 WRX WRP10) or friends/family owned turbo cars (XR6T, MKV Golf GTI) all used around that 1L/1000km rate.

The whole 1L/1000km is more a guideline on what you should deem as acceptable oil usage.

Again, these figures only applie for petrol turbo cars.

Well I hadn't really been checking the oil much (Last car was a Subaru, didn't really ever need a drop) and when I did check it the other day is was below minimum.

That is an insane amount of oil to use. My dealer advised me that my first service was due at 15k, I even asked if there was an 8k service and he said no only 15k.

What is a good oil to top it up with? I have been using an oil that I bought from VW, but it was expensive and only 900ML. I need something that will last longer if I will be topping up that frequently.

Catrol Edge 5w-30 is all I use in my turbo cars.

Every 5000k for VW turbo engines is NOT ideal. 15,000k or 12 months is fine on 502 oils, and could be considered to be too frequent if you use Longlife oil such as Enviro+ 5W30.

To the OP - do not be talked into 5000k oil changes. That's only required for ancient, dirty diesel truck/4WD engines.

That really depends from the driving conditions and how long one wants to keep the car for. The clean oil will not do any harm to the engine and I wouldn't go by used oil analysis either, because that only analyzes the used oil and not the sludge, varnish and other deposits that accumulates in the engine. I change oil every 7,500km in all our cars.

Read more about the sludge problems in VW cars.

Up to 1L every 15,000klms is normal oil consumption.

Some cars may use a little more within the first 15,000klms, but most will consume a lot less after the first oil/filter change.
